well, the civil war likely got a little more uncivil this week with the Devon Williams saga.

Looked like he was a Beaver, but they really jumped the gun in Corvallis. Williams might have led them on, but it was never a done deal, especially with a 18 year old kid who has family pulling him in several different directions

the story as I see it (and I've talked to a couple of connected boosters): Williams really wanted to be a Duck last February...a lot. But he had family pushing him hard for USC. The family won out on signing day. The Duck coaches were surprised by the last minute flip, then they moved on. Williams was never happy at USC, and USC told him he would have to redshirt. That was the catalyst for him entering the transfer portal

He contacted Oregon but was told there was no scholarship formally available. He visited the Willamtee Valley and he visited OSU where they recruited him hard. Williams knew he had to pull the trigger quick at a school on the quarter system, otherwise he'd have to sit the 2020 season too (rules). So he gave a verbal to OSU and signed a financial aid agreement (which is non-binding). As I said, OSU jumped the gun and placed his name on the official roster...and that was taken as a done deal....but it obviously wouldn't

meanwhile, Oregon didn't have an available scholarship...BUT, they had a waiver application 'in process' with the NCAA from the Chris Steele situation a few months ago. Apparently, that waiver came thru (or there is a yet unannounced transfer from Oregon). Oregon informed Williams of this, and it wasn't a violation because Williams wasn't enrolled at OSU and attending classes (classes started Wednesday at OSU and Williams is in LA), so with a scholarship available, and classes not starting at Oregon till next week...the way was clear for Williams to sign with the school he's wanted to sign with for a year

maybe the best thing about all this is seeing Canzano seething about all the egg on his face. He just couldn't help himself...he had to get all self-righteous about the Blue scholar school winning one against the "glitzy-hype-no-substance-Nike" school he's had tons of issues with over the years. He's a vainglorious scumbag muckraking hypocrite who rarely bothers to vet the basis of his self-aggrandizing opinions. Which means he's probably going to trash Williams and insinuate bad behavior by Oregon. Anything but admit he got it wrong

I'm not surprised this happened. Never understood why the guy would've gone to OSU in the first place. Sounds like he used OSU like many NHL teams used Portland to leverage a better deal for themselves.

    no

he has to sit out a school year, which is 3 quarters...fall, winter, and spring. So he'd be eligible for next season assuming he gets enrolled in time and meets minimum standards scholastically. IIRC, he forfeits a year of eligibility due to transfer so he'll be a sophomore next season

I covered that in my OP. He was at serious risk for losing two seasons of eligibility. Because of NCAA rules, any school on a semester system would have triggered the loss of 2 years. So he needed to enroll quickly in a quarter system school and be eligible for fall term. Fall term has already started for most quarter schools and the deadlines for enrollment are past. I think only Oregon and OSU were left in the Pac-12 when he could have a chance of playing next season. His options were very limited

the rule for transfer is a player must complete a full scholastic year at the new school before becoming eligible (summer school doesn't count)
