The Miami Heat have begun discussing the possibility of adding Carmelo Anthony in the summer to create a Big Four.

The concept would require LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to opt out of their current contracts and likely take further salary reductions in their new deals.

The Heat also are prevented from making any formal contact with Anthony until July 1 and can do so then only if he opts out of the final year of his current contract.

Anthony has until June 23 to notify the New York Knicks of whether he will opt out this summer.

James in particular is likely to try to recoup potential salary sacrificed through off-court business opportunities.

James is doing very well financially due to endorsements and entertainment projects.

During the Eastern Conference Finals, sources say James was finalizing what is believed to be the biggest equity cash payout for a professional athlete in history as part of Apple's recent $3 billion purchase of Beats Electronics. Sources briefed on the situation say James realized a profit of more than $30 million in cash and stock in the Beats sale after he had struck a deal to get a small stake in the company at its inception in 2008 in exchange for promoting its high-end headphones.

James made $30m on Beats alone, without putting any money into the company other than his time and wearing them. Amazing.

Awesome! Sends a message to the rest of the players in the NBA if you want to win take less money.

Personally I think 'melo is a selfish player who is talented but will take the ball out of Lebron's hands.

This would be bad for the NBA if this happens.

Heat should hope all 3 opt out...then drop Wade's old ass, and just replace him with Melo.

If this happens this is what the NBA will be saying to all the small market teams in the NBA because you know it's going to be a trend.

Miami is the 42nd largest city proper in the United States, with a population of 419,777.

Portland is the 28th largest city proper in the United States, with a population of 587,865.

Nice stats you cherry picked. What is the metro area total, or just the population within 100 miles compared to Portland?

Miami is the 16th largest TV market in the US, Portland is the 22nd.

No matter what you look at I don't think Miami will qualify as a large market.

    1. Why isn't this tampering?
    2. Is the intention to get everyone in the US rooting for the Spurs right now?

City limits aren't the most accurate way to measure the population of a metro area.

You're better than this. Plus, Miami is an international city that may as well be considered a tropical destination. Portland is that rainy place in either Maine or Oregon where hipsters still are popular.

I don't consider Miami to be a large market team. BGG is trying to portray this as a doom and gloom scenario for small market teams like Portland. I don't agree with him.

Who cares about market size. Miami is a "hype city".

This is about the new breed of NBA players. This superfriend brigade trend won't stop unless the CBA is modified NFL style.

He's just pissed because Riley is coming up with a plan to get LeBron to extend.

This could very well work. The top four players of that draft on one team. Amazing stuff.
