McGrady was great, at times even brilliant — as evidenced by this 13-point barrage in 35 seconds — but it feels like he could have left an even greater mark if not for the constant back and knee ailments that slowed him down. But maybe it's that desire for greater success and more fulfillment in one-on-one competition that will lead McGrady to another sport. Our sport, the wonderful game of baseball. If Jeff Van Gundy, his former coach with the Houston Rockets is to be believed, then we will see McGrady travel down that road in 2014. During Friday night's NBA on ESPN broadcast, McGrady's name came up while Van Gundy and partner Mike Breen were discussing Kevin Durant's remarkable 12-game streak with 30 or more points. McGrady actually had a 14-game streak during the 2002-2003 season, which is the second longest streak all-time. That tidbit then segued into Van Gundy revealing McGrady is considering a switch to baseball as a pitcher. “Speaking real quickly of McGrady, I think he’s going to play independent league baseball as a pitcher this year. In the independent league,” Van Gundy said. “I’m being serious. I’ve heard from sources in Houston — seriously — that he’s throwing over 90 miles per hour. The Sugar Land Skeeters — Roger Clemens pitched for them last year, it was awesome.” Randy McIlvoy of KPRC in Houston later confirmed Van Gundy's impromptu report after speaking with his sources close to the Sugar Land Skeeters. Well, his arm must healthy despite suffering a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder a few years ago. He definitely sounds serious about this, especially if he's calling in Roger Clemens for the occasional workout. With that said, though, we really shouldn't be surprised if we know our McGrady history. During an in-game interview in 2006, he revealed that baseball was his first love and something he'd love to try. At the time he was solely focused on basketball, but his early retirement — he's only 34 — puts him in a position to give it the old independent league try. And hey, if he's really throwing 91 mph, he has a chance at some success at that level. It could be a fun story to follow if McGrady lands a contract, and you know he will if he's one-hundred percent serious about becoming the next two-sport star.
Shouldn't "two-sport star" mean playing both sports at roughly the same time (as in the same year)? That is how I have always interpreted it. If a player retires from one sport and then takes a year or so off before trying another sport I wouldn't personally consider them a "two-sport star" even if they had success in both. I could see how others would see it differently however.
Part of his regimen while working out with Clemens probably involves a special "juice drink," of sorts.....
I think one would be a "two sport star" if one were a star in two sports, consecutively or concurrently. But one would have to be a "star" in both sports. Not a star in one (basketball) and an independent league wannabe in the other. That's not a "two sport star".
That's what I was thinking. McGrady will be 250 lbs. and throwing 96 mph after a few months with Clemens.
