Ironically, it's most likely a cap clearing measure by New Jersey to help them go after a BIG name free agent next summer - such as LeBron. If Cleveland does it, they better win THIS season, because it might be LeBron's last in a Cavs jersey. Seems like kind of an odd deal for both teams. Why would New Jersey want to help make Cleveland a contender when it might make LeBron decide to stay where he is if he feels the Cavs have a legitimate shot at a title in the next couple years. I don't think it does, but it certianly makes them better and likely to go deeper in the play-offs. And, even if the trade makes Cleveland a better team short term, why would they want to help enable another bidder in next summer's Lebron bidding war? BNM
Let's say LeBron goes to New Jersey... who else is even on that team besides Devin Harris? Adding LeBron to Jersey hardly makes them a contender. It just seems like it would be a step back for him.
No Brook Lopez, CDR, Yi, Ryan Anderson all aged 3 more years. As Mynets likes to point out, Cleveland without Lebron is far less attractive than the Nets are. You can't just compare Lebron's Cavs to the current Nets. Lebron's Nets would dominate.
I'm not really so sure. Harris is a stud, but I'm not sold on Yi or Brook Lopez yet. They have potential, but that's an awful lot of youth surrounding LeBron. LBJ wants to win now, not three years from now. Of course, you will probably have a high lottery pick this summer... so maybe you can add at leasts one more really good player via the draft.
I probably meant to say 2 years. They're not pieces now, but in 2 years, they probably will be given the impact they're already having now. LBJ wants to win now, and he wants to win in a couple more years. I'm not sure where you were going with that. His desire to win-now isn't relevant to his free agency 2 years from now.
"Win Now" doesn't go away. Not now and not two years from now. In fact, it will be more so in two years. My point is this, how likely is it that LeBron will go to a team that is full of young prospects over a team that is already a contender? I'm not trying to punch holes in your plan, I'm just saying that you better hope your prospects pan out in two years or I think it will be very difficult to lure LeBron. Of course, you're in the east so anything can happen. The Hawks got in the playoffs and they were pretty much only a bunch of young talent surrounding Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby.
Well they won't be young prospects in 2 years. Besides that, I think we can both agree that the chances the Nets get Lebron is based on a LOT of "ifs."
I don't understand this move for Cleveland. Carter is on the cusp of declining and has a horrribly large contract.
Carter used to be a superstar. Solid player but far from a superstar. ..But he's being paid like he's a superstar. I guess that evens it out.
He's still a star. His base statistics are 24 PPG / 5 APG / 4 RPG. And that's on 47% FG%, which is excellent for a perimeter player. In terms of more advanced stats, like PER (which is minutes- and pace-adjusted), he's clocking in at 23.4. All-Star level is roughly 20.0 PER and superstars are generally at 25 PER and above. And his TS% (essentially a FG% adjusted for three-point shots being worth more and free throws) is .571 which is excellent. As a second option to LeBron James, he'd be one of the best second bananas in the league.

Do you think the Nets really have a chance as it is? I think LeBron should stay with Cleveland. It's his home town. This isn't just about winning a championship. This is about being born in Ohio, growing up, and taking the hometown team from dead last to the promised land. If he pulls that off (and he has come oh so close in such a short little time), then he will have pulled off one of the great feats in sports and he should look for that to be his legacy. And he'll probably do it. And that's why it might suck to be a Blazers fan over the next few years. I'm worried we'll get to the Finals and get spanked by him year after year. Let that not be true. Let us, at least, split hardware every other year with LeBron.

this reminds me of 20 years ago. I was a big Jordan fan and I wanted him to win it, but as the Blazers emerged, Jordan became the villain and then he won 6 titles and I was miserable about all 6. I worry this will happen now. I've been a big fan of LeBron and now I worry he'll finally win but I'll be miserable. I'll hold onto what you said. Oden will stop him at the basket. Those will be some great finals games. Hopefully, a Cleveland/Portland rivalry can get ratings.
