hahaha Casey Holdahl @CHold 15m Brandon Roy "playing" a few games in Minnesota last season reportedly cost Paul Allen $17 million http://www.csnnw.com/article/brandon-roys-return-nba-would-cost-trail-blazers-17-million …
This was discussed over the last two weeks on this board. Allen was lucky to have any of that contract insured.
I'm surprised it was only $17 million of insurance. Pritchard talked about it on Canzanos radio show after he was fired as if the bulk of the contract was insured. Those were very misleading comments on his part. $17 million of an $82 million deal means it is about 80% uninsured. Just another reason to add to the list of why KP was fired.
Not to defend KP or anything, but isn't it the pres (aka Slimy Larry Miller) involved in the $$ negotiations?
Just read Watson is giving up No. 25 so Williams can have it, thus preserving the devine No. 7 and saving humanity as we know it, in the bargain. Whew. That was a close one.
I wouldn't think so, the GM is in charge of basketball operations which includes player contracts. The president oversees all business operations. With such a big contract I’m sure multiple people had involvement. Regardless of who was at fault for handing out the deal it just struck me as slimy to say in interviews the contract was insured so the Blazers get relief when in fact it sounds as though only a small portion was ever insured. KP knew since he was fired the team isn't going to comment on this any more so he was free to paint whatever misleading image of himself he wanted.
Allen has to pay $17m of the $82m. Doesn't that mean that ~80% of it was insured, since that's who is paying the rest of the contract? Am I missing something here?
I thought the same thing. If Paul Allen is paying $17 of $82 million than insurance is covering 79.2%
Really? Watson is a gentlemen. Personally neither didn't need to give up anything and I'm a huge Roy homer.
In negotiations, Pritchard made himself Roy's advocate. He was supposed to play hardball and he did the opposite, raising pro-Roy talk from his Oregonian friends. The editorializing put fan pressure (including from many posters here) on the rest of management to hurry up and cave in. Immediately after Allen reluctantly signed, Roy announced that he couldn't play. He had been hiding it. (Just like what Oden's doing with Miami, till they find in a month that he can't play.) That got Pritchard fired.
I'm guessing Draco read it wrong and got his numbers backward. I'm amazed that any of it was insured, so only $17m out of pocket seems reasonable. I'd have paid that for Roy's Game 4 performance against Dallas alone.
I'm glad to hear Williams isn't wearing #7. For me it would be a little weird, but I think it might put more pressure on Williams to live up to that number too. Let's leave Roy (and his number) out of this year's new look Blazers . . . new look for the third year in a row
Roy probably won't walk without pain for the rest of his life because of what he left on the court in Portland, and people are bitching because a multi-billionaire has to pay 20% of Roy's contract. I really get embarrassed by Blazer fans sometimes. No wonder nobody with any elite talent wants to play in this city these days. We're seeing the same thing all over again with LMA, as the Chicken Littles try to run him out of town, too.
Williams only picked 7 because 2, 5, and 25 weren't available. He probably didn't even think about it being Roy's number, so he gives Watson a bit of cash, and gets one of the numbers he has previously worn. I agree in that wearing 7 brings unnecessary baggage that is of now fault of whoever wears #7.
As someone else said, there is a good chance money changed hands. I've heard of that happening before. But maybe he just did it 'cause he's a good guy. Donno.
