More Pacers By Mark Montieth mark.montieth@indystar.com July 27, 2004 The Indiana Pacers expect to sign point guard Eddie Gill to a two-year contract this week, filling a roster need. "We've reached an agreement," Gill's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Monday, adding he expects a signed contract today or Wednesday. Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said that while a contract has not been finalized, the team has "talked seriously" about signing Gill. "Our coaches and (team president Larry Bird) like him a lot," Walsh said. "There could be something done there." The 6-foot Gill, who turns 26 in August, is expected to receive $720,000 next season, the NBA minimum for his level of experience. Gill would join returning starter Jamaal Tinsley and recently re-signed veteran Anthony Johnson. The Pacers have rescinded their offer to three-year veteran Jamison Brewer. Rashad Wright, a second-round draft pick this year, is not expected to receive a guaranteed contract and will have to make the team in training camp. Gill has played for three NBA teams since completing his career at Weber State in 2000. He has also played in Italy and Greece and four American minor leagues. He played in the CBA All-Star game last season. He averaged 2.3 points in 22 games for Portland late last season. His most productive NBA season came with Memphis in 2001-02, when he averaged five points and 2.1 assists in 23 games. Gill was traded from Portland to New Jersey for $3 million and the draft rights to Viktor Khryapa on June 24, with the understanding the Nets would not pick up Gill's option, allowing him to become a free agent. He is regarded as an athletic, defensive-minded point guard who is more of a playmaker than a scorer. Once Gill is signed, the Pacers will have 14 players under contract for next season. The Pacers remain interested in free agent center Erick Dampier, whose status remains in limbo. Dampier's best option appears to be to sign with Atlanta, which reportedly has offered a six-year deal for nearly $50 million. Dampier's agent, Dan Fegan, also has been trying to broker a sign-and-trade with the Warriors or a three-team trade that would enable Dampier to sign a major long-term contract. Dampier also could take the route that another Fegan client, Stephen Jackson, went a year ago, accepting a short-term deal for a potential long-term gain. </div> Link
He is nice on defense and a playmaker instead of a scorer.........never seen him in a game, but if he's good.....
