Former University of Nebraska and Central High School star running back Ahman Green has returned to his home city to play for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League. The Green Bay Packers' all-time leading rusher will line up in the backfield of the Omaha expansion team when the second UFL season kicks off in September. Local fans will have an opportunity to see Green in action on Friday, September 24 when the Nighthawks debut at home to the Hartford Colonials at Rosenblatt Stadium. "I am very excited about this season with Omaha Nighthawks," said Green, who enjoyed a successful 13-year NFL career with the Packers and Houston Texans having been selected in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. "I can not wait to put on a Nighthawks uniform. Doing what I do best in the town where I grew up in is a dream come true!" Green was born in Omaha and after playing at Central High School, where he was named Omaha 'Player of the Year' his senior year, he started for the Huskers for three seasons, helping them to two national championships in that time. "We have signed a player who is a winner, a record-setter and an exceptional talent, who will help us win games," said Nighthawks head coach Jeff Jagodzinski of his prominent signing. "The buzz here in Omaha is fantastic and I know the fans here will now be even more excited about the coming season with Ahman on their roster." In his freshman season at Nebraska, Green ran for 1,086 yards, setting the school's single-season freshman rushing record and led the team with 914 yards on the ground in his sophomore season. In his junior year, he ran for a Nebraska-record 1,877 yards and 22 touchdowns and posted 12 consecutive 100-yard games, including three of more than 200 yards and an additional 99-yard game. In three years, Green amassed 3,880 yards and 42 touchdowns, both second all-time in Nebraska history. UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue added: "We have promised to deliver a quality product on the field and Ahman Green is another example of keeping that pledge we made to fans of the UFL. I am excited to see the Nighthawks offense in action with this exciting rusher bursting out of the backfield." In keeping with United Football League policy, the terms and conditions of the contract were not disclosed. Green's arrival in Omaha was announced when the running back attended a Nighthawks fan event that attracted more than 350 of the team's followers. News of his signing was then relayed virally by fans and through the UFL's burgeoning social media network presence on Facebook and Twitter before the official press release was circulated.
