Source ESPN's Len Pasqureali <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>It won't be all that surprising, no matter what Brett Favre decides about his future, if the Green Bay Packers consider choosing University of Texas quarterback Vince Young with the No. 5 slot in the first round. Assuming, of course, that Young still is available there. Some in the league insist that the Packers' brass is becoming increasingly captivated by Young's unique skills set. So much so that, while the Packers have a lot of holes to fill, they might find it difficult to pass on a player of Young's stature, even if there is some redundancy involved in taking him. Green Bay invested its first-round pick in 2005, of course, on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and the conventional wisdom is that he is the starter of the future. But there is a belief in some quarters that the former University of California star isn't necessarily viewed as the heir apparent to Favre's job by everyone in the Green Bay organization. First-year head coach Mike McCarthy was the offensive coordinator in San Francisco last season, and worked with 49ers top pick Alex Smith, so he is eminently familiar with having to wean a quarterback away from the shotgun as his primary formation and convert him to playing behind center. That's the task, or at least part of it, which awaits any team that chooses Young.</div> I would be for this if Mario Williams and AJ Hawk are somehow off the board. Even if Hawk is on the board I wouldn't mind going Young. Young is a much better QB already in my opinion than Aaron Rodgers. I've seen nothing out of Rodgers in practices, and games that impresses me. I think he'll do worse than Joey "The Bust" Harrington. I also think Young is more Randall Cunningham at 6-5 230 than being the next Mike Vick. Vick is too small which makes him more injury prone and is part of the reason why he struggles. Young has the size to play NFL QB and his arm is good as well. Pretty much if Mario is on the board he's a no brainier in my opinion. If he's off than I wouldn't mind Young. Don't be shocked if this happens. Rodgers contract is easily moveable.
Hawk or M Williams should still IMO be on the board when Green Bay is on the clock. If the Pack draft VY; 1) Will this "force" Favre's hand if he still has not decided? 2) What happens to Aaron Rogers?

Young over Hawk doesn't bother me though. Why because GB can ship Rodgers off. He's healthy so they could probably get at least 2 picks. Maybe a 2nd and 4th. Being young and healthy and a first round pick helps his value. or for example GB could ship him off to another team. Someone like Buffalo for example GB trades Rodgers for NAte Clements who is refusing to play unless he gets a new contract. (Just an example remember) I'll take Young and Clements over Rodgers and Hawk anyday.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Pack Attack)</div><div class='quotemain'>Hell will freeze over and the Earth will crash into the sun before the Packers take Vince Young.</div> Knowing anything about Ted Thompson and that's he values his player board more than needs. So if Young is above Hawk when the Pack pick. Young could very well be the pick..
If TT took Vince Young he deserves to be fired. You have to be stuipud to pick two straight 1st round QBs. It was part of TT decision to draft Rodgers
what a waste it would be if they took Rodgers in the first round last year you can't just throw him out and draft another qb in the first round again. It'd be ridiculous and a setback for the team. They should take a good defensive player like Williams or Hawk
I don't know if it would be a setback to the team. Aaron Rodgers has looked nothing like a solid QB and TT knows that. Drafting Young would pretty much show that TT knows he made a mistake and he wants to fix it. I'll take Young over Rodgers anyday and I bet we can get maybe more value for Rodgers because he's very young and healthy than the Vikings did Culpepper. I'm all for drafting Younf if Mario Williams if off the board. You don't pass on Mario Williams if your the Pack.
Its never a waste to take a 1st round QB if you think he is worthy of the pick....young QBs, especially those with talent, retain thier value better than just about anything else....in the Packers situation I think its smart....if you have both guys, let them compete against each other and the winner gets to start....then, next off season, if you should be pretty sure which guy is your guy and you trade the other one....I dont have a problem with a rebuilding team doing this, because it could potential lead to a bounty of picks....
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (bakes781)</div><div class='quotemain'>Yeah just ask the San Diego Chargers. lol</div> Chargers took Brees 3 years before Rivers though and they had thought Brees flopped. They also got him in the 2nd round. Brees got hurt and that gave the Chargers an excuse to give it to Rivers. I agree with everything Beef said. GB is rebuilding. QB is so important now. Let's try to find the right one. I think Young is going to be a great player no matter where he goes. I def think he'll be better than Aaron Rodgers.
I think the laughing about the Chargers and first round QB's taking refers to the drafting of Ryan Leaf...
No actually porky had it right & I think if ur GB u should give Aaron a chance b4 u basically decide that last year's 1st round pick was a waste.
Yes, I completely agree with you. Rodgers should be given a chance to play. The team has plenty of other needs besides QB. Let's take the "Best Player on the Board" is a good theory...but generally doesn't apply to the QB position.
If Young is such a sure thing then why isn't he signed to the Texans already since they hold the #1 overall pick? The fact is for a position of such great importance there is more stories of 1st round busts then there are successes. Young has been the most scrutinized QB prospect in recent memory. Whether it's his side arm delivery, his low scoring on the wonderlic or that he only played in shotgun at Texas, Vince clearly has his doubters. The only factor putting him in the same sentence as Leinart is the Rose Bowl. Prior to that it was thought that he should stay at Texas another year.

I'm not saying they should do it. I'm saying it wouldn't be stupid. Rodgers looked awful in Green Bay last year. Usually players at least show signs of potential. Heck even Joey Harrington did it in Detroit. Rodgers showed nothing. Drafting Young and trading Rodgers is certainly an option and not a bad one.
I'd say it's more than likely a smoke screen to force teams to trade up to make sure their guy Super Mario slips to them. From a team aspect that would be wise. However I see your point if TT is more concerned about getting fans to stay during the post-Favre era then taking a chance on Young makes sense. Ultimately winning is all that fans care about & I think Mario gives u a better chance to do that. Huff or Hawk for that matter as well.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (bakes781)</div><div class='quotemain'>Yeah just ask the San Diego Chargers. lol</div> Examine the situation closer because this scenario is exactly why its ok to draft the 2nd QB....the plan was to draft Rivers, bring him along for a year or 2 while Brees held down the fort....Brees developed to a level that they didnt expect, so then they thought they might be able to get some extra compensation for one of them....then Brees got hurt, and they decided it was an injury in such a place, that they werent comfortable with his future....if they were, they had the cap space to franchise him again....it speaks volumes that they will enter the season with extra cap space, instead of Drew Brees....that also means they must think Rivers is ready....so what was the original plan? draft rivers, let him sit and learn, have him take over! thats exactly what happened....what options would they have right now if they hadnt taken the QB ? they would be married to Brees, and his shoulder with A.J. Feeley as the best option if he cant go....they didnt get the picks they later thought they might due to an injury(which can happen to anyone at anytime), but the plan did result in exactly what they wanted, so I suggest it was a very wise move, and worked out well for them....
