    Packers to retire Favre's number
    Thursday, April 17, 2008 03:45 PM

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (Ticker) -- The Green Bay Packers will retire former quaterback Brett Favre's No. 4 during their season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on September 8.

Favre, 38, who holds virtually every NFL passing record, announced his retirement last month after 17 seasons.

"The season-opening game is always an exciting event, and now we're pleased to add the retirement of Brett's No. 4 to that evening," Packers president Mark Murphy said. "It will make for an electric atmosphere at Lambeau Field."

Favre will become the sixth player in Packers' history to have his number retired. The others are: wide receiver Don Hutson (No. 14, 1951), fullback Tony Canadeo (No. 3, 1952), quarterback Bart Starr (No. 15, 1973), linebacker Ray Nitschke (No. 66, 1983) and defensive end Reggie White (No. 92, 2005).

All of five of those players are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
