Pacman to Start Over Newman?

IRVING — Dallas Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman was again limited in practice Friday with a strained groin, putting the recently reinstated Adam "Pacman" Jones one step closer to opening Sunday’s season opener in the starting lineup.

It would be Jones’ first game since Dec. 31, 2006, when he was with the Tennessee Titans. He was suspended for the 2007 season for repeated violations of the NFL’s personal-conduct policy before officially being reinstated Aug. 28.

Jones’ spot in the lineup is contingent on Newman’s status, which coach Wade Phillips said will be a game-time decision.

Newman has been sidelined since the first week of training camp with a strained groin and missed the entire preseason. Although he returned to team workouts last week, he has been limited in what he can do.

He said the Cowboys would prefer to bring Newman along slowly rather than have an early-season setback.

If Newman doesn’t start, he might still play in the nickel defense. If he doesn’t play, rookie Orlando Scandrick will take his place covering the slot receiver in the dime defense.

No limits on Stanback

Receiver Isaiah Stanback said he is ready to go and will have no limitations Sunday, despite wearing a harness to protect a dislocated shoulder.

Stanback will be the third receiver behind Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton.

If the Cowboys add a fourth receiver Sunday, look for them to sign Mike Jefferson off the practice squad rather than Danny Amendola.

Jefferson has been getting reps with the regular offense in practice in preparation for a call-up.

QB coming

Owner Jerry Jones said on a local radio show Friday that the team would sign a veteran quarterback Monday.

According to a source, it will be former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brooks Bollinger, who was in town Tuesday to visiting with the Cowboys’ brass.

The Cowboys are comfortable with Bollinger, who also comes for a cheaper price tag than former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms.

According to a source, the Cowboys are also still concerned that Simms might not be all the way back from the ruptured spleen he suffered two years ago.

Kickoff returners

Cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones and running back Felix Jones will serve as the primary kickoff returners Sunday. Adam Jones is the primary punt returner, so look for Felix Jones to get the first opportunity on kickoffs.

It’s unlikely they will be on the field at the same time, meaning that cornerback Orlando Scandrick will go deep as a blocker.

Thats only because Newman is questionanble. Otherwise Pacman would ne nickle defense outside (Newman slot) and Henry at LCB. If Newman can't play, Scandrick takes inside position....
