Panthers Talking Contract With Delhomme

At a time when some Panthers fans are hoping that their favorite team might be thinking that the team has come for a new quarterback (especially after that divisional round debacle against the ‘85 Bears Cardinals defense), the franchise is considering an extension to their long-term relationship.

According to Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are talking to Delhomme’s agent about a new deal.

Delhomme turned 34 in January, and he currently is signed through 2009, at a base salary of $5.325 million.

But his cap number is $11 million. Though Chandler suggests that a new deal could cut that number in half, we doubt that the team could muster a reduction that large. With an apparent $5.725 million in pre-existing bonus allocations, the Panthers could reasonably hope to cut the total number to the $8 million range, given the minimum salary requirement and the first-year allocation of any new signing bonus.

Coach John Fox acknowledged the existence of talks on Wednesday.

“There are discussions,” Fox said. “It’s always ongoing. There is no question we’ve got a commitment to Jake. Whether that comes to fruition with a contract [extension], I can’t say.”
