The Heat has only five players with contracts guaranteed beyond this season. Shaquille O'Neal still has two seasons and $40 million left on a contract that expires in the summer of 2010. It's also the same offseason that Dwyane Wade has an option to re-sign.

"We'll have a boatload [of cap space]," Pat Riley said. "That's the year there are real good free agents are available. You've got to be ready." -- The Miami Herald

Riley finally acknowledged that the current season would not be the focus at the Feb. 21 trading deadline.

"If we were .500 or a little bit above .500," he said, "then I would be looking for instantaneous help for this year. I think we're a little bit beyond that right now.

"I've made a couple mistakes with personnel and those things haven't worked out and it's costing us." -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel</div>
