Exactly what is Patrick Ewing's specific role as an assistant coach on the Rockets? From what i've seen and been able to gather, his only job is to be Yao's personal coach and nothing else. At games, when Yao is on the bench he is always right next to Pat and I always see Pat talking to Yao, I don't know what they're both saying, but it's obvious from his body language that Pat is giving him some sort of instructions on what to do. If Yao gets traded away (i'm not saying he is, i'm just using this as an example), would that mean Ewing would not really have any sort of role on the Rockets anymore? What exactly does Pat's job as an assistant coach consist of?
Teaching Yao is probably his main job in the organization. He probably has more duties like bench warming and cheerleading(very underrated ) but I can see why Van gundy would use Ewings knowledge to his advantage. But why take Ewing when Abdul-Jabbar is available? I still don't understand why this guy doesn't have a job in the NBA yet. Can someone please explain this to me??
Ewing's job is really to "mold" Yao. He is Yao's personal assistant and if we didn't have Yao, I don't think Ewing would be with this franchise. Courtvision, the reason JVG picked Ewing is for the reason that he knows Ewing better than Kareem and feels like he would have the most success with him.
Ewing's job is to coach and tutor Yao, Mo and Cato on the rigors of NBA post play...and he's earning every penny...I'm sure he also keeps track of timeouts, fouls, etc during the game...
