I think I need a new power supply for my PC. For the last few weeks, my PC will shut down on its own and wont power back up until I unplug the power cable and plug it back in. Looking online, it sounds like its the power supply and is a common problem with the PS I have now. At first I thought my PC might be over heating and that is why it shuts down, but I checked all the fans and they are all working and I have the PC set to run in energy saver mode. What should I buy? http://enuinc.com/index.php?l=product_list&c=30 This is what I have now: http://www.txcesssurplus.com/servlet/the-11577/Delta-GPS-dsh-400BB-400W-Power/Detail
Dunno how old your PC is or if you're running a greedy video card or if you've added a lot of powered components to your PC but a Thermaltake TR-500 or CoolerMaster RS500 would do the trick. Both highly rated PSUs for simple PC's and both would give you a power boost over what you have now. Before you buy a PSU definitely open up your PC (supposing it isn't under warranty) and vacuum/air blast it out. Try and move cables and wires out of the way of airflow in the case. You might have an overheating problem due to dust and poor ventilation. Might only need another $10 case fan?
You may want to look for some program online that shows you the temperatures read from your motherboard. Or next time it halts and you get it to boot, go into the bios and read the temperature settings there. Write them down and google to see if they're too hot. Your computer absolutely will just halt immediately (shut down) if it's overheating.
I have an Asus Essentio CG5275. Only thing I've added is an average video card (ASUS EAH6670/DIS/1GD5 Radeon HD 6670 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card) Added that over a year ago. Thanks!
But why would it start overheating when that's never been a problem before? All the fans are working. I cleaned out the inside (dust). I've read that because I have to unplug the power cord from back of tower and plug it back it, that is a good sign its the power supply. How do I go into BIOS and check temp?
I think I'm gonna go with: http://enuinc.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=596 Thermaltake TR2-600 600w
As your system boots up it will give you a chance to enter BIOS before Windows loads. Should be a keystroke like Delete or F2. Hit it repeatedly when you see the message. From there you can navigate to system sensor or PC health or whatever it is called on your system and the temps should be listed there.
Because your fans have sucked in a bunch of dust over time and aren't cooling the components enough. Or the grease for the bearings of the fans has collected dust or otherwise degraded so the fans don't spin proper. You can also try taking the cover off and blowing a desk fan on the motherboard and see if the problems continue. You really want the case on and enclosed proper so it generates the air flow it is designed to do.
A what? That sounds like the name of some bad sci-fi movie or something you catch from a Thai hooker! I have something that's called a Macbook and never have had any problems.
