"One young Coyotes fan held up a handmade sign during Saturday night's home opener against the Detroit Red Wings telling of the revenge the home team would act upon its visitors.

Mind you, the boy spelled it "revange," but that's beside the point.

For many of the Coyotes faithful, this felt like a rematch of Game 7, a chance to erase the disappointment that plagued the fan base earlier this year when the Red Wings ended the Coyotes' playoff hopes and magical season.

But another opportunity at the Stanley Cup wasn't at stake during Saturday's game, just two points. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, they couldn't snatch that up, losing 2-1 to the Red Wings in overtime after taking eight penalties, three of which came in the extra frame.

"We definitely wanted to beat them, there's no doubt about it," captain Shane Doan said. " . . . I didn't like the way it ended, but obviously we can't take that many penalties."

A tripping call to Ed Jovanovksi followed by an interference call to Adrian Aucoin and a roughing minor to Keith Yandle kept the Coyotes at a 4-on-3 disadvantage for much of overtime. With 16 seconds left, Niklas Kronwall broke the tie."
