I could not quite believe it when I woke up to hear that they are contemplating finishing League games with penalties and ending draws. Who do they think they are aiming the game at? How many teams when faced with good opponents will pack a team with defenders and take the risk, having seen the time wasting tactics within five minutes of the start at my club by inferior teams I would suggest quite a few. If we should consider ideas to improve goal scoring, why not look at the size of goals? Before you dismiss the idea, think about the reasons for change. The beautiful game was invented and clubs formed in England in the late 19th century amongst the working classes. What was the average height of someone of that class in that time? I suspect that it was a good 6 inches less than todays well fed fit young men. Surely if that is the case we should be looking to reset the parameters for the goal to make it as difficult to defend as it once was. I would suggest a raising of the crossbar by 6 inches and widening the goal by a foot, possibly 2. In the same vein there is an argument of increasing the minimum weight of jockeys from 7stone 7 pounds upwards for the same reason. Todays youngsters are simply bigger and more developed and cannot fit there big frames around very small weights. We do have to move with the times in football, but traditions must be upheld, a magnificent draw can give as much pleasure as a win,but do consider this alternative.
I spat my tea out when I read about that myself. Its unbelievable that someone as actually thought of that. What next 2 points for goals outside the area. Just leave the game as it is. Ok penalties are exciting but its because they aren't often used . The likes of Chelsea will be signing good penalty takers to bring on near the end if its a draw. If they want to reduce the risk of draws why not just not give any points rather than 1.
