"That the Penguins weren't going to defeat Ottawa was apparent from the early minutes Sunday.

The real drama was whether Sidney Crosby could continue his career-high scoring streak. Just in the nick of time, Crosby scored his 30th goal to extend the streak to 24 games with 3:22 remaining. It was about the only positive event on an otherwise forgettable evening for the Penguins in a 3-1 loss.

"There were a lot of factors," Penguins defenseman Kris Letang said. "We need to forget about this one and move on."

Crosby twice found himself in the penalty box, and a goal was scored after one of his infractions. He also was about to visit the penalty box on another occasion when Ottawa scored during the delayed penalty.

"If they were penalties," said Crosby, who believed the Senators were guilty of embellishment on more than one occasion.

The first period could not have been worse for the Penguins. They were unusually sloppy in their own zone throughout the opening 20 minutes.

With Crosby in the penalty box and the Senators already having established control of the game, defenseman Erik Karlsson fired a puck from the right point that hit defenseman Paul Martin's stick before grazing Mike Fisher's jersey and finding its way past goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury."
