Jason Quick came on Wheel's at Work around 12:15 and confirmed a rumor from last week that Buck Williams will indeed be an Assistant for Nate. I love this move and i hope his toughness will rub off on LA , Greg and the rest of the team. I believe we as fans will look back in a year and see this as the biggest move made outside of a Big trade that may or may not happen. Welcome Back Buck ...... GO BLAZERS
HELL YES!!! I freaking love Buck. This can only help the team!!!! YAY!!!! Great, GREAT choice. Defense and rebounding this should be our focus. We need to be San Antonio or Detroit circa 2004 only on steroids. Well I mean MORE steroids then Ben Wallace was taking. Ok, now that I think about that, scratch that it would probably kill an elephant to take that much. Still you know what I mean.
Does Buck have any coaching experience at all? Obviously, the last year, Lucas has been sick, but prior, i thought he was a mediocre coach. His toughness never rubbed off on guys, why would Buck be any different?
That's just silly. Lots of experience, heck, there is an entire NBA team named after him! Also, he is good with numbers!
So wait...if we had hired Juwan Howard as an assistant coach, people (here and in the media) would've praised it to the skies as a great hire. Terry Porter was hired as an assistant a few years ago (Sacramento? San Antonio? I don't remember) with zero experience. And all the sudden this is a bad hire to some people? Jesus. How else is he going to get experience, but get experience?!
I can't speak for anyone else. I personally am not a fan of the hire because I feel/felt that the person who can most use a personal coach on our team is Oden, and I'd prefer someone with some experience and a successful history in that regard, as opposed to someone just cutting their teeth. And everywhere I read, people thinks it's a great hire because Buck was tough. So was Lucas, yet everyone seems upset with the toughness of our guys. Just being tough doesn't necessarily mean you can teach someone to act the same.
I'm glad we are bringing back fan favorite Buck and giving him a shot as an Asst. Coach. He is one of many asst. coach's we'll have, so its not like he'll be the only guy instructing and helping our players develop. His toughness alone should help a great deal.
Do people with toughness always know how to teach others to be tough? Is it something that can be learned, over being born with that desire to play tough?
Lucas basically had 1 half season to work with Greg. I'm not sure you can really put much into what he did or didn't do with Greg.
I'm not saying Lucas did anything bad with him. I'm just saying I think he needs a good coach. And I don't see Buck as a good answer. He might turn out to eventually be good, but my personal prefernce would be he not cut his teeth on basically our franchise, and a HUGE part of us being able to win a championship.
Yeah, I don't get it either. We're not talking about the head coach, we're talking about an assistant. TONS of assistant coaches in the NBA are former players with ZERO experience. Sam Cassell being one of them.
yeah, I think this is true. That said, if he can teach LMA to get into the trenches, he will have more than earned his money. But if I had a tree that grew money, the republicans say the government gave it to me!
