The New York Yankees beat the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 10-9 because of a walk off single by Jorge Posada in the bottom of the 9th inning. It was a real exciting game to watch. Andy Pettitte gave up 5 earned runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings of work for the no decision. Jonathan Albaladejo pitched a perfect 9th inning for the win. When Pettitte first came into the league, he had a good sinker that got the double play ball. Now he doesn’t get as many double plays because he has more quality pitches that he uses and gets outs with different pitches. He uses a cutter, a slider, a curveball, a change up and a fastball. Andy Pettitte started the game with decent movement and velocity. He had a good curveball and cutter but he couldn’t locate. He did not have great command. When runners got on base, he started to over think because of when Ellsbury from the Red Sox stole home on him. Tonight he was facing a team that runs and steal all the time and he had a preoccupation when the runners got on base. It seemed he was obsessed with the runners and he lost focus on the hitters. Andy Pettitte caught a bad break however in the 6th inning with Ramiro Pena’s non play. There were two outs and the ball was hit right under Pena’s glove. If Pena made that play, the inning was over but Pettitte seemed to unravel after that. Pettitte labored and left a runner on base every inning. He didn’t have his best stuff and struggled with his location. You still have to give the Angels credit because Pettitte made some good pitches and the Angels responded with base hits. Melancon came in the game and left balls out over the plate and it was a bad night for the bull pen. Jose Veras tries to be too fine and gets behind in the count. He was missing up in the zone. He should try to cut the plate and go in and out. Jorge was putting together great at bats as well as the rest of the Yankee hitters. They really worked the Angel pitchers and worked the count. They did not go down easy even when they fell behind. The Yankees are getting contributions from every one in the line up. There seems to be a certain spark the Yankees have. Even the bottom of the lineup is hitting well. Pena is hitting, Cabrera is hitting and when Gardner comes in the game, he gets a hit. The Yankee line up 1-9 is getting quality at bats. Ramiro Pena got a big hit and he has a lot of confidence. Robinson Cano is hitting like an mvp. He’s tearing the ball and it seems that all of his hits come at crucial times. There are no holes in Cano’s swing this year. After Cody Ransom went on the DL, the Yankees were hoping for a quick Alex Rodriguez return. A-Rod might be a little more than a week away from coming back. Ramiro Pena is making Ransom’s loss less painful because he is not an automatic out. Pena knows what his game is and that is to slap the ball around, pick up some base hits and play good defense even though he didn’t make a play tonight. He doesn’t try to over swing and do too much. He tries to put the ball in play and hit some line drives. He’s done a great job. Melky Cabrera is another player that’s taking a simple approach to every at bat. He’s not over swinging and he tries to put the ball in play. It’s a pretty good night because the Yankees’ young players are playing well and the Yankees won. The Red Sox lost and the Yankees are 1 game behind them and 2 behind the Blue Jays. I’d like to write an article about Robinson Cano but the Yankees play at 1:00 PM tomorrow.
