<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Lakers coach Phil Jackson said playing 82 regular-season games causes injuries, and suggested that the NBA consider cutting back. "Our league has to discuss the number of games we play. Eighty-two games is too many," he said before the game. "They train year-round. During the season they play 3 1/2 games a week or seven games in 14 days. They play when they are fatigued and that's when they get hurt. I've cut practices to 45 minutes. I've never had a team with this many injuries. Guys need time to recharge and rehab." ...</div>*found this under game notes of the rockets/lakers recap. What do you all think of this, agree? disagree?
I can see where Phil is coming from, especially with all the injuries the Lakers have had this season.
This is a bunch of bull. Without the NBA I'd be .... well, lets not go there.I don't mind shortening the first round of the playoffs or even the second round (in fact - I like this idea) but please don't cut down the season length. Plus, if the NBA did this - it would be very hard to compare players from different eras because their stats might look a lot different if they had played in the other one where their was more games and you had to be more consistent.
He has a point that the regular season is long and gruesome for both the players and the coaches. It takes a huge physical toll on the players but as the great Stephen A. Smith would say Quite frankly it has become a tradition. If they were to change the amount of games they would change the constant to basketball teams. We would lose the "50/60/70 win accomplishments" and all those past franchise records would be abnormal with the new amount of games.
Stretch the games out through more of the year :nasty: More ball to watch and maybe less injuries for players (less fatigue and less back to backs, etc.)
What a pussy ass. Baseball goes 160 something games, and they are on planes every 3rd day, that's wearing too. Tell Phil to take his suppository, go to bed, and shut the hell up.

I guess you might was well just leave it as is and have the players man up to the brutal work.
Again, tell Phil to shut up, he's an idiot. He's never had a problem before, why now? Oh, I know, because injuries affect HIS team, and HIS TEAM, isn't like the Bulls. Phil Jackson is the most overrated coach ever.
Having less than 82 games would kill the records and such that people have made in the past. Id love to have more games but then it'd wear the players out too much. It did kinda seem strange that he mentions this just in this season when his team has been injured..Still, go Lakers
As much as I like Jackson, I think he's wrong on this one... The gaddamned players get paid more money than anyone for sh*t's sake and for what? To play a game not even ALL YEAR ROUND!!!Phil's bitching should get him nowhere, as the league would be foolish to shorten the season length (plus losing tons of money on season/game tickets and not to mention the merchandise sales lost that would be sold during any games they take away)... That's just a buncha f*cking bullsh**, if I've ever heard it. Phil, shut the F*ck up and just keep coaching... You'll not win another Championship again anyway.
I think the season length is fine. I say they should start playing in October though. They can space all the games out and have the playoffs start on the first week of April instead of mid-April. Playoffs can start immediatly after NCAA championship. That way, Finals are done by late May. Teams can play a minimum of two games a week and a maximum of three. Other than that, keep everthing else the way it is
""Again, tell Phil to shut up, he's an idiot. He's never had a problem before, why now? Oh, I know, because injuries affect HIS team, and HIS TEAM, isn't like the Bulls. Phil Jackson is the most overrated coach ever.""Really now? Lets see.......Without Phil Jordans Bulls won how many titles from 1985 up into he became coach? None.... and then when Phill took over in 1990 or 1991 (I don't remember) The Bulls would go on to win 3 titles in a row do a pretty good job decent jobwithout MJ in 94 and 95 then when 3 more. No im not giving all the credit to Phill but he was a big part of it. with out Phil Jackson the lakers had Shaq and Kobe from 1997 to 1999. With Phil the Lakers won 3 straight Championships right in his first 3 years as coach. And after a season without Phil the Lakers missed the Playoffs for the first time in years then a year later Phil returns and so does the Lakers to the post season where they do a really good job taking it to the Suns. You say he's overrated? Phil may of had 4 of the best players of all time on his rosters but it wasn't like he was just sitting back letting them do what they wanted to do. He guided them to greatness.. That is why he is not overrated.
I believe I wrote a few short paragraphs about this awhileback. Basically, I asserted that if you cut down all conference games to three (14 teams * 3 = 42) and kept the 2 games out of conference, you'd have 70 games. Now, by stretching the schedule in the same way, you eliminate back to backs and player keep fresh. This only means better basketball.* Less players half-assing it every 2nd game of a back or every game of a long road trip. There are no back to backs, and a long road trip takes a much longer period of time, allowing recovery.* Because the schedule is stretched, you can still slide in games every night, keeping television fans such as ourselves happy.* More recovery time = less injures (by however small a margin)That's my take, but as either Rok or BigMo so finely stated, Stern won't reduce the schedule. Hell, if I were him I'd try extending it. More games equals more green, and the NBA loves green.

Phil Jackson is the most overrated coach ever.</div>Yeah, an overrated coach who always puts the team over the top. Look at the Lakers before he got there...They got swept by the Spurs in the playoffs. And the next 3 years under Jackson, they win it all. Good case you got there! O, and not to mention the 6 rings in Chicago. Sure, he had MJ and Pippen, but beyond that, he didnt have much. That teams inside game was pretty weak if I remember correctly. And also, it is alot more tiring to play a basketball game than a baseball game. You dont put out 1/5th of the energy...82 games still isnt too long though. They have been doing this forever.
I actually think cutting a 82-season to 65-season or something is good. We've seen what to much playing can dO: Elton Brand, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade etc. These players have literally just about played all-around starting last season, and we saw that James and Brand expecially were affected by it dearly. I really wouldnt mind this, give them more rest.

Cause if theres less home games, theres less money coming into the teams pockets, which means less salary for the players.
Trailblazer's right, Kobe gets paid $16,900,000 to work 9 months. Come on, taking a beating is a part of the game, in any era to every player. It's the way it goes, sometimes teams get unlucky, like the Lakers.
