In terms of points given up per possession, Phoenix has been one of the top defensive teams in the league almost all season. Right now, they're fourth in the league, just ahead of Detroit (Detroit has ratcheted up their defense considerably in recent weeks). Here are the teams rankings in terms of defensive efficiency (points given up per approx. 100 possessions):

    Team Defensive Stats

As of 2/1/2006, the top 8 teams are:

    <font face=""Courier New""><font color=""Green"">San Antonio 99.1
    Memphis 102.5
    Indiana 103.3
    Phoenix 103.7
    Detroit 104.3
    Minnesota 104.4
    LA Clippers 104.4
    Chicago 105.0</font></font>

By reputation, the Suns are known as a gunning offensive team that doesn't play much defense. More accurately, they're the fastest-paced team in the league that's also one of the top teams in the league in offensive and defensive efficiency. Quite a potent combination.

Here's an excellent look (courtesy of 82games.com) at how Phoenix plays their defense, and why it's so effective:
