Pierce responds to Q-Rich

Paul Pierce [stats] simply wasn’t taking the bait as he went swimming yesterday through a media chat dedicated largely to Quentin Richardson’s characterizations of the Celtics [team stats] captain as an actress and faker.

On the thespian charge, Pierce smiled and said, “Well, I don’t get paid for that. I get paid to play basketball.”

Pierce was felled by a right shoulder stinger in the final minute of Saturday night’s Game 1 victory against Miami. Richardson, long an adversary of Pierce, wasn’t buying it and made some comments along those lines, setting off an altercation that included him using his jaw to strike Kevin Garnett’s left elbow.

The NBA last night suspended Garnett for Game 2 and fined Richardson $25,000.

Richardson explained after Saturday’s game, “Sometimes (Pierce) falls like he’s about to be out for the season and then he gets right up. That’s all I said.”

If Pierce took that personally, he wasn’t letting on.

‘The only thing I can do is respond with my play,” he said. “Regardless of what anybody says, anybody does to me, I’m just going to respond with my play. That’s about it.”

That hasn’t necessarily been the case between Pierce and Richardson, who have a long history of taunting each other.

“It’s just been nothing but talk, man, truthfully,” Pierce said. “I don’t even get into that he-say, she-say thing. That stuff is all for y’all to sell papers. I’m just going to continue to play basketball.”

He understands that even petty rivalries will be magnified in these times.

“This is it,” Pierce said. “There’s only 16 teams left and everybody’s fighting for one thing. So you’ve got to expect that tensions are going to rise. But the thing is just keep it in the framework of the game to where it doesn’t get out of hand.

“But you’ve got to understand it’s going to get edgy at times, because we’re all fighting for one thing and only one team can have it.”

And Pierce may have taken a bit of a shot at Richardson and all but one of his Heat teammates.

Pierce better start playing better, we made the comeback last game when he was on the bench.
