Ok, I just heard an absolutely wild, wild rumour that will almost certainly never happen but will be fun to discuss. This one comes from a former college roommate who works as a House Attendant (he delivers food , drinks etc. to the luxury boxes. And he hates it because he's at the game but is so busy he rarely if ever sees any of it) at the Palace. His story is that he made a food delivery to the Owner's box and Tom Wilson (team president) was on his cell phone and said, "The offer is Rahim and Jackson and that pick for Ben, Hubert, Chucky and Rebraca" (pause) "Ok, if it ends up going 3 ways call me back." Then he hung up and tipped my buddy 20 bucks! Dang, I need a job like that. Like I said, this deal will never go down, but my buddy is no liar so I'm certain that a call has been made. But they say 99% of calls in the NBA never lead anywhere anyway. I'm not capolgist either, but it looks to me like it would work out. Here's how the deal would look Pistons Get: Shareef Abdur Rahim Stephen Jackson some sort of draft pick (presumably a 2nd rounder) Hawks get: Ben Wallace Chucky Atkins (2 years left on his deal) Hubert Davis (expring contract) Zeljko Rebraca (Expiring contract) Personally I think that this is the Hawks dreaming; Lets see, they get the DPOY, a quality backup PG and cap relief all in the same deal? But if it turns into a 3-way deal like the conversation indicated, who knows?
Interesting.Although I don't like it from a Pistons point of view .Sjax is my boy and I feel SAR is an underrated player who can put up consistant numbers however Ben is one of the best defensive players in the league. No one works harder than him on the glass.Teams get concerned driving through the middle because of him.I don't see how this makes Pistons better as a team. The defense suffers big time.Which is the whole key to the Pistons style of play. If the pick was a lottery pick. Then I would certainly re-think my opinion.
Good point Allnet. The pick really is the kicker isn't it? Considering that it might be a 3-way deal there is no telling who else is involved or whose pick they are talking about. But unless its a very high pick the deal is quite one-sided. Even a high pick doesn't resonate with the Pistons who are trying to win now. Unless they really start to skid badly, I doubt the Pistons will make a roster shaking move like this one before the off-season. That does not, however, make it any less fun to talk about. Edit: Plus imagine the Hawks interior D with Ratliff and Wallace. Terry would be the only scorer left. They would have talent, cap room and a desperate need for a leading scorer. Any free agent would love that.
Lets say it does turn into a 3 way trade.Maybe add the New York Knicks to the mix.Layden has made it quite clear he badly wants Theo Ratliff. If Hawks get Ben then Ratliff is no longer needed at the center spot. Knicks trade Kurt Thomas Charlie Ward Shandon Anderson Somehow sort that into a 3 way so the Knicks get Theo Ratliff along with Jason Terry who seems to be on the block.Pistons would get Shareef Abdur Rahim ,Stephen Jackson and Shandon Anderson with the lottery pick.Hawks would get Ben Wallace,Kurt Thomas and Charlie Ward. Now I doubt this works under the cap but maybe a trade like this could work out. BTW I expect Joe Dumars to make some kind of trade by the deadline.
EDIT: Kvhfan- Neither do we. At least not until summer when he may be dealt. If you want to know why I think this check out the first 'trash' here: http://www.justbball.com/forums/showthread...8358#post138358 Ok here it is. THe 3-way with NY, Atl and Det that works under the cap. Detroit gets- Shareef Abdur Rahim, Stephen Jackson, Maciej Lampe Atlanta gets- Ben Wallace, Chucky Atkins, Zeljko Rebraca (Expiring Deal), Hubert Davis (Expiring Deal), Shandon Anderson, Kurt Thomas. NY gets- Chris Crawford, Theo Ratliff, Darvin Ham (expiring deal), out of Shandon Anderson's horrendous contract and into tons of cap space when Ratliff and Crawford's deals expire after next season. wild. p.s. I still think ATL gets too much out of this so to make it more realistic send new york their 2nd rounder for next June and Detroit a conditional future 1st rounder for like 2005 or something.
So each team's starting 5 in that trade you just posted Pistons PG Billups SG Hamilton SF Jackson PF Abdur Rahim C Campbell Hawks PG Atkins SG Terry SF Anderson PF Thomas C Wallace Knicks PG Ward SG Houston SF Van Horn PF McDyess C Ratliff
That looks about right Allnet. I added the idea of couple of picks a 2nd ago too. And KT definitely wants out of New York http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketba...6p-129193c.html
Whoa, that would never happen from the Pistons POV. They just passed on drafting Carmelo so that Prince can develope, and then they sit his on the bench to play Jackson? Not so sure about it. It would definitely help them on offense, but as has already been said, the Hawks would be struggling big time on O. It seems too good to be true for the Knicks, who basically just dump Thomas for Ratliff. Why would they need Detroit in on a 3 way to do that? And Wallace is more of a power forward anyway, and Atlanta would lose that size. It would really be a blockbuster if it happened, but I see something more like Rip and Campbell for Jackson and Ratliffe, without the Knicks involvment. The Pistons get more of a center than with Campbell, and the Hawks get a slashing, scoring two guard. Then they'd be more willing to dump Terry and look for a real point guard. But again, not sure if that's gonna be too real for either team.
Nobody thinks any of those are going to happen. Allnet and I were just kind of messing around and having fun with it. But evern though we were just playing, the deal is not nearly as far-fetched as Rip and Campbell for Jackson and Ratliff. 1st of all Rip has a base year contract and is virtually untradeable this season. Secondly the Pistons are a very good defensive team who struggle to put points on the board. Why would they trade thier most effective scorer for a shot-blocking center who doesn't score much?
Dumars is already in hot water over missing out on Melo. Detroit fans would riot in the streets if Big Ben was ever moved, not to mention Dumars' life would be in serious danger. It's a laughable proposition, although I think Shareef, K Thomas and Theo will all move before the deadline.
I was just throwing out the Jackson for Rip deal(campbell for ratliffe kinda cancel out, w/ the pistons getting more), but i doubt that its more far fetched than a trade involving big ben. Remember, you said you doubted the pistons would trade away their most effective scorer, but they did just that in unloading Jerry Stackhouse for Hamilton in the first place. Bringing in Jackson might not by itself replace Rip's points, but it would undoubtedly give Prince more shots, who could then develope into their top scorer. But again, I was just throwing that out as a more likely scenario, not a real proposition.
well, now layden wont be involved here it will be zeke talking from the knicks side, so now we cud forget ne bulljunk deals ripping the knicks
There is no way Big Ben is going anywhere. He's staying put. He's the name of the Pistons Organization, he brings the energy and hustle to the court. He's the best defensive player in the NBA, and most of all, I'm his biggest fan! If he left, I would probably put a hit man on Joe D, unless we get a draft pick like Omeka Okafor or somethin like that. I got 2 Authentic and 1 Swingman Wallace jerseys...if he was traded.....damn..
I like it for the Pistons. Generally, its ben for SAR and Jackson. Rahim would be a nice post threat, and open up things for Billups and Hamilton. Jackson is an outside threat who has championship experience and is a nice perimeter scorer, especially off the bench.

Add some scorers to their lineup, and open up a spot for Milicic to fill. Hopefully they give Milicic a shot if they make this move. He'll need to start learning sometime soon.
I agree completely with allskill911. It would work out for all teams involved. Detroit would get a proven scorer, and a draft pick. ATL would get much needed defense and a new look to lure a top FA (Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady). And the Knicks would clear a lot of cap space to get Rashweed. It works out for all teams involved. And I think that deal would have gone down if the Pistons asked for a 2nd round pick. The reason it probably didn't is because they probably wanted a lottery for adding Ben into the deal. I mean who wouldn't want a lottery pick for Big Ben Wallace. I just don't see the sense in giving him up without a LTRY pick.
