I'm going to ask a question to all basketball fans. When you REALLY look at it. The Pistons had a great offseason. They got Nazr Mohammed and Flip Murray for an aging Ben Wallace and they didn't even need to spend alot of money. And Jason Maxiell is doing GREAT in the summer leagues. The bench is lookin' good and I'm looking at a better season than people think the Pistons will have.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">It appears that the Detroit Pistons have cornered the market on Flips in the NBA. The team came to terms with free agent Ronald "Flip" Murray on Friday on a two-year, $3.6 million deal, a league source told ESPN.com. The team had been looking for a combo guard who could penetrate to the basket and produce instant offense off the bench and Murray appears to be a perfect fit. Murray made a name for himself two years ago in Seattle when he was inserted into the starting lineup on opening night after Ray Allen suffered an injury and scored 20 or more points in 10 of his first 11 games. Even more perfect for the Pistons was the price at which they got him. The Pistons originally offered the majority of their mid-level exception to Murray, but Murray hesitated to take it, hoping to get a more lucrative deal elsewhere. In the meantime, the Pistons found out that they were losing Ben Wallace and made Nazr Mohamed an offer. When Mohammed accepted, Murray was left without a big suitor. In the end, the Pistons were able to fill both their needs -- adding a center to replace Wallace and adding some scoring punch to their backcourt. While no one is pretending that the Pistons are going to be better without Wallace, they are adding some depth to what once was a paper thin rotation. Expect Murray, Carlos Delfino and Antonio McDyess to give the Pistons a legit eight-man rotation next year.</div> Source This is awesome news, I'm really happy about this signing, I've been a fan of Flip for some time now, I think he's quite underated. He will definatley help bolster our bench.
Nice signing for the Pistons. I thought he was going to look for a spot where he could start, guess not. He'll be good off the bench for the Pistons for some quick scoring.
Seems like a very offensive oriented team compared to previous seasons. They'll definitely still be a big threat and an elite team, but let's see if they can get back to the finals.
Flip can be amazing when he plays the right way. I just hope he has a good run here with Detroit. Maybe he'll learn to play some defense too.
Looks like Flip (suanders) is getting his offensive style team together. They should be pretty dang good next year.
This is the main reasons Ben Wallace pointed out for his exiting of Detroit, the fact that Detroit was getting away from the defensive mindset that made them champions. This roster will succeed in getting them many wins in the regular season, but come post season they are in trouble.
Great career move by Flip Murray, and another patient move by Joe Dumars. I think Flip is one of those players who's ready for a breakout season once he finds consistent minutes. In the Detroit he will have the opportunity to be the first player off the bench to backup either guard spot, or possibly play alongside Billups and Rip if Detroit plays some small ball next season. The Pistons are still going to be a top team in the East, but I think their success will ride on Rasheed Wallace. He needs to get back to scoring in the post and not lurking out on the perimeter. Sheed has always had one of the best back to the basket games in the league and his ability to hit that fadeaway jumper on the baseline makes him a load to handle down in the blocks.
He really did pick up the scoring pace with LeBron when he came in last season, hopefully he can do the same for Detroit.
Flip has rarely shown that he can be effective when he isn't getting consistent minutes and I am very shocked that he'd sign with the Pistons considering that he will be playing behind two of the more durable guards in this league. I think that Flip is interested in being a part of a championship caliber team but I expected him to sign a longer deal and for more money. The knock on Murray is that he is not a point guard and he is too short to be an effective shooting guard, but I do think that he has shed the label of being a defensive liability. He actually did a terrific job guarding Chauncey Billups in their series last year. Overall, I'm disappointed that their wasn't a bigger market for Flip. Joe Dumars was enamored w/ Flip when he came out of Shaw in 2002 and Flip Saunders watched Flip have one of his finest games as a professional when he hit the game winner to beat Minnesota in 2003. I understand why they wanted to bring him on board but I would think w/ teams that need some help in the backcourt like Orlando, Charlotte, New Orleans, Milwaukee, and even Denver that Flip would have been more sought after. A deal where he only gets 1.8 million dollars per season seems to not reflect Murray's talent. Oh well, I guess that it is rare for NBA journeyman to hit the jackpot in the free agent market.
Oh please, I hate when people claim how players are "too short" to play a specific position. Flip Murray has proven time and time again that he has game, has he not? Well thats the only thing that matters. He's only an inch shorter than the likes of Ray Allen, Michael Redd, Kobe Bryant etc. all premier guards in the league.
very good pick up because now he can fill in for billups or rip if they are having a bad game or are in foul trouble
