EL SEGUNDO - A day after he drew the wrath of Mike D'Antoni, Phil Jackson was optimistic that the Suns coach would understand why he called a timeout late in the Lakers' blowout win.

D'Antoni and his staff were incensed when Jackson immediately followed a Phoenix timeout with one of his own, with 4:45 left in the game and the Lakers leading 111-78. D'Antoni stood with arms crossed, his head nodding and a frown on his face, gesturing towards the Lakers' bench.

His emotions appeared to get the best of him.

Jackson said he called the timeout to speed up the game because he knew another TV timeout was soon to come.

"When he looks at it, he'll figure out that there's an obligatory timeout coming," Jackson said after Saturday's practice.

After the game, D'Antoni said Jackson "disrespected our players."

"He might want to try and do that in playoff time when we bust them every time," D'Antoni sniped.

Jackson said D'Antoni's reaction "gave me a better understanding, perhaps, of him."

    And what is that?

"That his immediate response is to think it's about him," Jackson said, "or whether it was about his team."

The Lakers and Suns next meet Christmas Day at Staples Center.

D'Antoni should've just kept his mouth shut. This isn't the past anymore.
