the impression is that our goal is to get the west's 8th spot and get into the playoffs. i say let's target 4th place and have a better chance of making some noise in the postseason.

on a different subject, i have a feeling that there will be a bigger trade that involves portland by feb 19. bigger than last year's taureen green trade.

Trade Raef and any from this list for david lee / boozer

    shavlik
    raef
    diogu
    frye
    sergio

TRADE Raef and any for gay / durant / granger

    trav
    martell
    bayless
    batum
    blake

TRADE Raef and any for Lebron

    pryz
    rudy
    lma
    oden
    roy

Considering the team now holds the #5 slot, I don't think they are shooting for #8. You think they want to get worse?

I second those who say let me have some of that good stuff you're smoking.

Rudy Gay sucks? That's news to me. He's not an all-star, but he's better than 5 of the 7 players drafted ahead of him in the 2006 draft.

right now he's not much better than bargnani or foye, if at all. he's not really better than outlaw at this point. it may be a matter of terrible coaching and being on a terrible team, but since the gasol trade he's been a below average NBA player.

    Since the Gasol trade he's averaging roughly 19ppg, 45FG%, 80FT%, 1 3PMG, 6RPG, 2APG, 3T0's, 1.5SPG, and 1BGP.

I don't know how you define average, but I think you would have a real tough time proving more than half the players in the league are putting up better numbers. It's clear you don't like his game, and I don't think it's all that great, but he is well above average. Foye and Bargnani are well behind him to date...

way to round up every stat lol. anyway he's a volume shooter who doesn't go to the line much and has a relatively poor TS%. more than half the starters in the league have a higher PER, and he's definitely in the bottom half defensively. as i said he probably isn't being coached very well at this point so it's hard to know where he's really at, but he's not remotely close to granger or durant and he's not someone i'd want the blazers to trade valuable assets for even if it were possible.

no they're not. they all have similar PER's and both foye and bargnani have better TS%, bargnani substantially better. foye is also playing a primary roll on a hot team. it's debatable which will have the best future, but it's certainly not obvious that gay is the best of the 3.

I didn't round up on every stat, but ok. Reduce everything to your liking, then find me roughly 175 players in the NBA that are better or are playing better. You can use TS%, PER, whatever combination of stats you'd like.

There are more players in the NBA that have a higher PER than lower PER compared to Rudy Gay? I find that hard to believe, but I'll take your word for it.

I still would like for you to list 175 players in the NBA that you think are better than Rudy Gay. We can pick stats all you want, but I doubt you will find many people that believe he is not a top 175 player in the NBA.

yes hollinger sets it up so 15 is league average. for comparison gay and outlaw's per-minute stats are uncannily similar across the board right now, and they have identical 14.66 PERs.

obviously PER can't tell the whole story, but it does indicate Gay is seriously underperforming compared to his reputation, and he shouldn't be a target we'd be quick to give up major assets for.

Ok, I'm assuming you're not going to take my challenge to name 175 players who you honestly think are better, and I understand. It would take a lot of time, and it is impossible to do without getting ripped a new one.

Also, I see his PER rates him 138 out of the 325 players, or something along those lines. So clearly by that measure, he's better than more players than not.

We agree that he isn't what Portland needs, we just don't agree that he is in the top 175 players in the league. I'm guessing a simple poll on the NBA forum would conclude the majority of people would agree with me, but I'll leave it at that.

Cheers to my Blazer buddy Crow... Rip City!!!

i didn't say there were 175 better players. i said his current stats are below average and he's underperforming his reputation.

i haven't looked at the full list. hollinger is the one that says 15.00 is league average for his system.
