Please identify

"Identify the mic" is a football term I keep hearing lately that I've never heard before. Now, I may be a girl but I do know quite a bit about football and I don't know what the heck it is. Asked all the know-it-all friends and they don't know either. It's driving me bananas.

I heard it referred to as a responsibility of the QB, even heard it yelled by a QB before the snap. Peyton, I think. But, as a friend so eloquently put it "Peyton gives soliloquies not a snap count", hehe ....so who knows.

I know there can only one mic'd helmet on the field at a time, so what's to identify? Ain't like defense wears mics.

My last best guess is that maybe the QB, or whoever is mic'd, might be requesting whoever's talking in the helmet to "identify the mic", ...upstairs, offesive co-ordinater, etc.

    Help?
