Listen guys, S2 is great because of how few rules there are here. One of the only that I give a shit about is the No Personal insult rule. Calling people liars, morons, idiots, etc. just destroys great conversations and debates in threads. All of you are very smart and your opinions are valued but the insults need to stop. Thanks
So when someone is clearly lying, and is proven to have lied, they can't be called a liar? jlprk provably has lied repeatedly over the past week. THAT is what diminishes conversation, not calling a liar a liar. If someone is going to deliberately lie to distract from the discussion, that needs to be called out, IMO. Even if it hurts their feelers.
Okay okay, enough with the joking. I have always tried to refrain from calling people idiots, unless they are Denny. But Denny can take it because he is a fictitious TV personality.
I don't think calling someone an idiot when they have demonstrably proven that state to be the case is an insult. It's no different than saying your fiancée is attractive. It's true on its face. In this case, calling someone a liar when they lie is just making an accurate description.
We've had this discussion before. You are intelligent enough to find a way to disagree with someone and show the inaccuracies in their posts without the insults. Also there is no need to carry it on to other threads. Some people don't read the OT section. Calling someone a liar in multiple threads over a disagreement in one thread doesn't lead to good conversations.
It's not just 'inaccuracies'. It's the blatant lies from a gimmick poster. http://sportstwo.com/threads/236685...njured-teams?p=3016933&viewfull=1#post3016933
nice, nice...so the cut off would be at "dickhead" as we do not know for fact that said persons head is in deed a dick..
Psssstt, PapaG, try the ignore button...for the first time in all of my online experience I have used it, fuckin works great!
I've never seen a thread on S2 get derailed from people complimenting each other. There are fascinating discussions on here and some great debates, but once the insults start all of that ends.
I'm as guilty of it as the next person, but I have to agree with SPD. I generally like the idea of sitcom sort of humor. People know each other really well and insults can be made in good fun. Like suggesting HCP get a job by standing around outside of Home Depot. I think he knows nobody really thinks he should really do that. I like to roll up my sleeves and get into somewhat heated discussions from time to time, but I don't waste my time posting with people I have little respect for. That is, I have respect for those I post with and argue with etc. But the outright insults for the sake of being mean spirited add nothing.
I've seen circle jerks on this board where the thread gets completely derailed. And I think you're conflating insults with identifiers. There are people that make really stupid points. They're are also people on here that lie to make their point. When they do so, you best advance the discussion by pointing out their idiocy or mendacity. Only when people debate honestly and openly do you have a good discussion. It's why there are certain posters to whom I simply won't reply, or if I do, I don't take them seriously. They don't wish to have an real debate, they want to troll or try to score cheap points.
That's weird, because whenever you and I get into it, I realize I'm arguing with someone I have no respect for. Kidding, except for having an avatar with a pink tie, I respect you.
Whenever I feel the need to insult, I hurl a foul bit of slander towards SPD. He seems to like it, what does that mean?
You don't have a problem with the personal insults so I'm not sure what your point is. What you just did in this thread was perfect - http://sportstwo.com/threads/236729-Okay-so-we-want-to-distribute-wealth-more-evenly Instead of insulting you challenged him. You're disagreeing with him but inviting him to have further discussion. That's all I'm asking for from others.
I call people idiots all the time. I think I've also called people liars. I want to continue to have the freedom to do so. As for someone insulting me, you're right in the fact that I couldn't care less. Call me whatever name you wish. To paraphrase Cliff Poncier, "Man, all this negative energy just makes me stronger. I will not retreat...maxiep is unstoppable. And tonight I rock Portland!"
As I see it, calling someone an idiotic is a subjective thing, and I shy away from it. As for calling someone a liar, when it's proven that they're lying, well, how else does someone debate that, other than to call them a liar?
