CLEVELAND – With tonight’s appearance in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, looming, Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian spent a few minutes this morning providing a medical update on several high-profile players who won’t play against the Washington Redskins.

The overriding sentiment: Everyone is on schedule.

    Including quarterback Peyton Manning.

“No setbacks that I know of,” Polian said.

Manning has begun the rehabilitation process after having his left knee immobilized for an extended time after surgery July 14 to remove an infected bursa sac. Along with getting the swelling under control, physicians aggressively fought any lingering infection with antibiotics.

Polian said an infectious disease doctor “has signed off’’ on any infection.

“That’s been eliminated. Now you’re on to the rehab process,” he said.

Initially, that involves Manning regaining his range of motion with the knee. Then comes strengthening the entire leg.

Once those issues are resolved, Manning likely will be cleared to practice.

The team has an unofficial return date of Aug. 15 for Manning and four other players who opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list.
That group consists of defensive end Dwight Freeney (foot), safety Bob Sanders (shoulder), guard Ryan Lilja (knee) and rookie tight end Tom Santi (knee). Linebacker Tyjuan Hagler (pectoral) isn’t expected to be ready to play until October.

Polian said Freeney worked out with the team’s physical therapist Saturday and will do so again today. Freeney had surgery on his left foot late last year.

Also, Polian confirmed rookie linebacker Philip Wheeler and second-year cornerback Michael Coe will undergo knee surgery to address damaged cartilage.
Coe’s situation is more serious, but it isn’t considered season-ending. Wheeler, Polian said, “should come (back) a little faster.”
