"Soccer? Nobody here wants to watch soccer. This is Portland, we like to drink beer and smoke weed."

    Bullshit, Portland loves soccer.

I love people who have been in a city for a year thinking they know how the city thinks. And of course, his roomates are cued in on what makes Portland tick.

Anyone who thinks soccer is popular in Portland is obviously from somewhere else.

As a "sport" here, soccer has all the acceptance of a Californian transplant who violates building codes by building a 3-story home blocking your view of Mt. Hood.

The fact the city council wants the public to subsidize it proves how unpopular soccer really is, and guarantees the councilpersons supporting this boondoggle will be looking for new careers soon.

Yah, the popularity of the original "timbers army" was fake. As was all UP soccer fans (both mens and womens). And ignore that portland has the nickname "soccer city usa".

Ahh, yes, the 70's/80's NASL Timbers. I attended more than one of those ridiculous sellouts....including the '75 playoffs. (they lost in the Soccer Bowl, though.)

Think of it this way, if the parking meter hours change to 9pm, then I guess the city will make more money when a MLS soccer game is going on. I guess then we should all take the MAX.

Soccer, beer and weed can mix together quite necely, so no need to exclude one of them.

They had their small cult following, but "popularity" is a huge stretch.

Sports far more popular locally at the time included any Little League Baseball game, high school football game, and Portland Wrestling.

1 person I know, out of tens of thousands I have known, likes soccer and played it a bit in community college.

I've never come across anyone else in my life who has any interest at all in it, except here apparently.

or you know, that could be down to the stupidity of that particular person instead of an entire sport. but no, that wouldn't help you and your anti-soccer agenda, now would it?

the portland timbers are well supported now, and they will be even better supported in MLS. this is a great city for soccer, and i would even argue the best in north america.

is this your basis for soccer being unpopular? lol.

out of the THOUSANDS (lol) of people i know, 3 are professional soccer players and all of my close friends are obsessed with the sport. so i guess that means it is the post popular sport in portland (or dare i say the world, oh wait it is). nice logic.

Soccer is huge wherever I am. All my friends in Oregon play it... all my friends in ND play it, and all of them in MN play it.
