Portsmouth Is A Tricky Fixture, Says O'Shea

Republic of Ireland international John O'Shea has wary of the threat posed by Portsmouth, and believes there could be a backlash from the four nil thrashing dealt out by Chelsea in the opening weekend of the Premier League.

Versatile 26-year old O'Shea believes Manchester United will have to pay Portsmouth respect in Monday evening's fixture at Fratton Park.

The Old Trafford side have already faced Pompey twice in the past two months drawing a blank in the Community Shield - but went on to lift the silverware due to a penalty triumph - and also in Nigeria in a pre-season friendly.

O'Shea is quoted by Teletext as saying: "We are aware there might be a backlash from the Chelsea defeat by Portsmouth... We have played them a couple of times already, which maybe helps a bit, because it is important to get that win."

He continued: "The manager has a few more things to deal with with us coming back from international week. But we do not want to give other teams a head-start."

Regarding his own position at the club, he said: "Hopefully I will be here as long as the manager wants me. It is a squad game now and I am happy here doing what I am doing. When I get in, it is a case of making sure I do enough to give the manager a difficult decision to leave me out the next time. That is the challenge I face every time I play."

"I would like to think I can play a bigger part this year... That is what I am planning on doing anyway," he concluded.

John O'Shea may enjoy a starting role in the Portsmouth tie, as Michael Carrick is out of action for three weeks. He faces competition for the spot from Anderson though, who has recently returned to United following his Olympic exploits.
