The Cavs assistant coaching crew is inexperienced at best and should be revamped next year. ESPN lists a few possible firings of NBA head coaches. 1.Kevin O'Neill (Raps) 2.Eric Musselman (Golden State) 3.Terry Stotts (Atlanta) 4.Chris Ford (Philly) 5.Nate McMillan (Sonics) http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/stor...avid&id=1782224 Do we want any of these guys? Are there any potential college coaches we could pick up? Where are we expecting to find assistants? Who will we fire and who will we keep?
Basically anything will be an upgrade. The former Boston head coach is an option, but I'm sure he'll be looking for another head coaching role. Anyways I cant see Silas sacking Silas Jnr as an assistant. Really this is an important area to remedy.
How do we know that we will fire one or a few of our assistant coaches? What do you know that I don't about the mistakes that they've made, or the reasons for letting them go? Educate me! And don't just say because there's got to be better assistants out there. This group of coaches will jell just like players do, maybe Silas sees potential in them?
The lack of defensive and offensive strategies throughout the season bring us to this summation. Not being able to react with game time decisions and plays was an obvious downfall. We just never adjusted in game when faced with defenses and offenses that were hurting us. This is a fault of the assistant coaching staff as well as partly Silas.
Man, how you gonna fire your own son when everybody's saying that you had a successful season? Unless he gets a nice head coaching offer somewhere during the offseason and he leaves under good terms. That would work. Who knows, it'll be interesting to see what goes down.
Keep Silas Jnr to keep the peace. However we do need to reavaluate the others. Maybe go Don Nelson style, and hire 100 of them. LOL
QUOTE!! ? One addition that might be made in the off-season is to the coaching staff. It's been rumored that Silas, who had one of the youngest staffs in the NBA this season, might look to add a veteran coach, perhaps friend and former Knicks coach Don Chane Just a small blurb out of the ABJ last week......Could be something to it!!!..........Tank
Maybe we should sign John Lucas for an Assistant Coach? lol.. or the guy that took his spot last year sorry can't think of his name..
Signing someone like Don Chaney is at least a step in the right direction. The fact that the assistant coaches was brought up, at least shows they realise there is a problem. And that is the first step.
It was nice to see Silas wanting to bring in a veteran assistant. There has to be an upgrade of his coaching staff. None of these guys would ever be a candidate for a head coaching job anywhere. A name that's available now is Dick Harter. He's a well respected assistant known for his ability to coach defense who has been on the staffs of some highly thought of coaches. I even think he and Silas were assistants together somewhere along the line. Just another name to throw out there.
It may not even be that we need to subtract ANY of the guys we have. I thought we only had three assistants whereas most teams have 4, 5 , or even 6. Silas Jr. isnt going anywhere. I don't know that there's been any reason to think he's been all bad, anyways. I like the idea of adding O' Neill a lot. They were discussing that on TNT during Cavs- Raps game. And team d MUST be adressed. It seems like Silas Sr. is good for guys like Booz, Diop, Bron who have potential to be better defensively and on the boards. We need guys for our shooters though. Any ideas for this?

No word on a replacement as yet, But color Donewald "GONE"....See Below Posted on Wed, Apr. 28, 2004 Cavs not renewing assistant's contract Associated Press CLEVELAND - Cavaliers assistant coach Bob Donewald Jr. will not be back for a second season with the club. The Cavaliers decided not to renew Donewald's contract for next season, general manager Jim Paxson said. "We felt that a change was appropriate," said Paxson, who didn't elaborate on his decision. Paxson doesn't have a timetable for a replacement. Among Donewald's duties with the Cavs was working with rookie star LeBron James. Donewald was the one who assisted James during his pregame shooting workouts. Donewald came to the Cavaliers last year along with head coach Paul Silas. He spent two seasons working on Silas' staff in Charlotte/New Orleans. Before working for the Hornets, Donewald spent five years as a coach and general manager in the British Basketball League. Donewald's father, Bob Sr., was a longtime college coach who served on Bob Knight's staff at Indiana! Good riddance...................Tank
It's been discussed in another thread but I thought I'd bring it over here. What about Mark Price? I have no idea about his coaching ability but everyone knows his credentials. Shooting is an issue on this team, and it would seem that a guy with Price's work ethic and previous success would be great for Wagner, good for McInnis, and helpful for LeBron. I have heard nothing about this happening, but it would seem to be a decent move. We also need a defensive specialist to teach this team to play D as a team, especially if we don't make any major changes and pick up talented defensive players.
April 30, 2004 -- Don Chaney could resurface on the shores of Lake Erie. With the Cavaliers firing assistant coach Bob Donewald yesterday, Chaney has emerged as a top candidate, with the chance of being reunited with his former Celtic buddy Paul Silas. The search process hasn't begun, a source said, but Silas is looking for a veteran assistant. Silas told The Post on Feb. 22 that he would consider hiring the former Knick head coach in the summer, saying he'd be a good influence on LeBron James. Donewald did most of his work with James. "It's certainly a possibility," Silas told The Post before LeBron's Garden debut. "[Don's] a special man." Chaney, unceremoniously fired on Jan. 15, was last seen being escorted out of the Garden, holding his briefcase. Chaney is still on the Knick payroll through next season. He's been holed up in Houston for months. He spent the first couple of a weeks living at his home in Connecticut, but needed to get away from the furor and has since alternated between his homes in Houston and Galveston. Looks like Don Chaney is still the odds on favorite.................Tank
