Ok everyone, I'd like to give you guys some insight into some great leagues that you may be missing out on. There are a few, but I have to start one at a time. I'm going to start with the Campeonato Nacional BancoEstado, better known as Primera División de Chile. This league is widely considered by fanatics to be one of the highest quality leagues in the World of football and definitely the most underrated due to neighbors like Argentina and Brazil whose national teams are far more successful. If you love great football, watch Chile's Primera División.

Resembling the Primera División Mexicana league system, the Chilean First Division is currently played by 20 teams, which play two single-round tournaments per season.

First, the Apertura tournament is played (usually held between January and June), and then is followed by the Clausura tournament (between July and December). For each Apertura and Clausura tournament, a single round-robin tournament, called the regular phase, is played first. Afterwards, a post-season play-off begins, where the best eight teams in each single-round tournament eliminate each other in the knockout tournament format in two-leg aggregate-score. In this way, there are two champions per season. Unlike most European countries, Chile currently has no official cup competitions, although they have been held in the past years.

The Chilean League of Football has never been regular in terms of their tournament systems. Traditionally, the League had consisted in one annual, double round-robin tournament, with the addition of a Cup, but the number of contesting teams and League format has varied throughout the years, until the adaptation of the Mexican system in 2002.

Very much like the tournament format, the relegation/promotion (to Primera B) has changed throughout the years.

Currently, the three teams with the worst scores in the complete season (including Apertura and Clausura, but excluding the play-off stage), are relegated to Primera B, and replaced by the Champions and Runners-up of this Division, making the number of participating teams for the 2008 season equal to 20. There is also a Relegation Playoff Tournament, played in a home-and-away basis by the team who finishes 18° in the First Division, and the teams who finish 3° and 4° in the Primera B.

The champions of the Apertura and Clausura of each season are immediately qualified to Copa Libertadores for the next year. The third Chilean spot in that tournament is used by the team with the highest score in the Clausura regular phase (that is, excluding the play-offs).

For the Copa Sudamericana, the qualification system changes every year. For the 2007 season, a small tournament was played by the top four teams in the Apertura. The winners of that tournament (Colo-Colo and Audax Italiano) qualified for Copa Sudamericana 2007.

Antofasta was founded on May 14, 1966 when the merger of the two amateur clubs, Unión Bellavista and Portuario Atacama, was final. Their original name was Club de Deportes Antofagasta Portuario. The team's first head coach was ex-Chilean international player Luis Santibañez. The team finished tenth in the second division table.

Under coach Francisco Hormazábal, Antofagasta was crowned champions of the second division in 1968. The final was played on January 19, 1969 against San Luis Quillota. The lone goal of the match was scored in the 33rd minute by Paraguayan Juan Pelayo Ayala. The team was promoted to first division after the win. On July 21, 1974 the team changed its name to Club Regional Antofagasta.

In 1979, Jorge León was name team's president and changed the club's name to Club de Deportes Antofagasta. The regional was not appropriate any more because of the appearance of regional club Cobreloa.

On June 30, 1983 Antofagasta finally gained promotion to first division once again after defeating Lota Schwager 9-0. The team was coached by Manuel Rodriguez and the nine goals were scored by Héctor Olivos (5 goals), Fernando González (3 goals) and Franklin López. However the following year the team again descended to second division.

Antofagasta experienced one of their most successful spans from 1991 through 1995, with coach Andrija Perčić at the helm and players such as Marco Cornez and Gabriel Caballero. In 1997, they once again descended to second division by finishing at the bottom of the table. In 2005, Antofagasta gained promotion to the first division along with Santiago Morning.

The club was founded by Italian residents in Santiago, on November 30, 1910 as Audax Club Ciclista Italiano in the Alberto Caffi's hat store, and was originally focused in cycling. As football developed quickly in Santiago, in 1917 the club begun participating in that sport, and in 1922, when the popularity of football increased within Audax's supporters, the club changed its name to Audax Club Sportivo Italiano.

In January, 2007, the club was transformed into a limited liability corporation, and changed its name to Club Deportivo Audax Italiano de La Florida, adding the name of the comuna in which it's always been located.

The club has always been a regular protagonist in Chilean football, but had never been able to participate in any major international competition until 2007, when they played in the Copa Libertadores. As a club founded by immigrants, it has a special rivalry with the other immigrant clubs Unión Española (founded by Spaniards) and Palestino (founded by Palestinian Arabs).

Cobreloa is a relatively new club, having been founded on January 7, 1977. The name Cobreloa comes from combining the Spanish word for copper (Cobre), and Loa, after the Loa River, the longest river in Chile, which is located near Calama and Chuquicamata, the world's largest open pit copper mine.

The club was able to establish itself in Chile's top flight very quickly, earning promotion after its first season, where they have stayed ever since. Only four years after they wer founded, Cobreloa reached the finals of the Copa Libertadores in 1981, losing in a third match to Brazilian club Flamengo. Cobreloa reached the Copa Libertadores final the following year, losing to Peñarol of Uruguay. The club also reached the semi-final of the Copa Libertadores in 1987.

They have competed in the Copa Sudamericana once in 2002 when they were eliminated in the first round and twice in the Copa CONMEBOL: In 1995 they reached the quarter-finals and the following year were eliminated in the first round.

At the beginning of 1925, football club Magallanes were undergoing an internal institutional crisis, stemming from problems between administrators and a few of the players who wanted to turn the club into a professional entity. A breakdown in negotiations provoked a few of the younger players to resign from the team after encountering opposition from the club's directors, established players, and fans.

After a series of reunions the former club Magallanes players led by David Arellano decided to establish their new club creating Colo-Colo on April 19, 1925, naming the club for a Chilean Mapuche chief. The individuals involved included, the Arellano brothers, David and Francisco; Juan Quiñones (who designed the team uniform and colors); Luis Contreras (who came up with the name); Rubén and Nicolás Arroyo; Clemente Acuña; Guillermo Garcés; Rubén Sepúlveda; Eduardo Stavelton; and Luis Mancilla.

The club were victorious upon winning the (Primera División de la Liga Metropolitana) through an unbeatable fashion. This was the first tournament that Colo-Colo entered and successfully completed. 1927 featured Colo-Colo as the first Chilean club team to go on tour across Europe to participate in a round of friendly games. Tragedy struck on May 2, 1927, in an exhibition match against Real Valladolid of Spain where team captain and founder David Arellano was critically injured after suffering a foul that caused him to experience Peritonitis. The inflammation would cause him to die the next day. Despite the huge loss, the club carried on and won the (Primera División de la Liga Central de Football) championships in 1928, 1929, and 1930.

During the years 1931-32 the club experienced their first institutional crisis when the directors wanted to invest a large amount of money in newer players. The new acquisitions did not render the team any positive results, therefore creating a decrease in salaries throughout the rest of the squad.

On December 8, 1932 Colo-Colo returned to play another championship final against Santiago based club Audax Italiano. As Colo-Colo was winning 2-1, a platform in the Audax Italiano stadium collapsed as fans were trying to rush the field of play. The match was canceled and the champion for that year remained vacant. The tragedy resulted in 130 injuries and 3 deaths.

Colo-Colo has won a combined total of 48 titles, encompassing 4 amateur titles, 41 national tournaments in the professional era and 3 international championships. Since the creation of the Primera División of Chile in 1933, Colo-Colo is the only club to have played in every season never having been relegated. The club is ranked among the top 30 football clubs in the IFFHS All-Time Club World Ranking.

The team joined the second division of the Chilean professional league in 1966 and won the tournament a year later gaining promotion to the Primera División.

In 1991 the team joined Colo Colo in representing Chile in the Copa Libertadores, they passed through the 1st round phase but lost in the round of sixteen against America de Cali. In 1993 the club were relegated after finishing 15th of 16 teams, but the club bounced streight back by winning the second division title in 1994.

Concepcion played their next big international tournament in 1999, they participated in the Copa Conmebol and made it all the way to the semifinals but lost against Talleres de Cordoba from Argentina. A real disappointment to the fans.

In the year 2001, they once again played the Copa Libertadores and beat rivals such as San Lorenzo from Argentina and Jorge Wilstermann from Bolivia. Once again they made it into the round of sixteen but lost this time to Vasco da Gama from Brazil who had top class players like Romário in their team. In 2002 the club were again relegated by finishing 15th of 16 teams in the aggregated table, they returned to the top flight in 2004.

In the year 2006 the team was suspended and could not play professionally in the whole year due to debts and unpaid salaries. The club was going to be relegated, but after a legal battle, they were readmitted in the Chilean first division, where they play in 2007. An alternative team (Deportes Concepción B) plays in the Third division of Chile as well.

Based in the city of Viña del Mar, the club was founded June 24, 1909 (named after Everton F.C. of England after being founded by visiting Liverpudlian sailors) and are the current champions of the Primera División. It is the sixth most winning team, having won the national title 4 times, an achievement shared with both Audax Italiano and Magallanes. Additionally, it is the second most winning team from regions, behind Cobreloa of Calama.

The "Ruleteros" (rouletters) nickname comes from Viña del Mar's status as a gambling resort. Everton's main rivals are Santiago Wanderers from the nearby city of Valparaiso. Valparaiso is seen as an old and poor city, whilst Viña del Mar is renowned for being a rich and glamorous place. The local derby has been dubbed the "Clásico del Puerto" or "The Seaport Derby."

Their home games are played at the Estadio Sausalito, which has a capacity of approximately 22,000 seats. The stadium was used as one of the venues for the 1962 FIFA World Cup. The semi-final between Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia was played at the ground.

Deportes Melipilla was formed 24 of January of 1992. The new institution became successor of Soinca Bata gown with regard to the federal rights, because the footwear company Dressing gown could not continue maintaining the expenses to maintain a club in professional soccer; therefore Deportes Melipilla inherited the establishment of Soinca Dressing gown and took his fitted in the Second Division. That same year Deportes Melipilla managed to ascend to First Division in the Liguilla de Promoción, but in that same instance it descended the following year.

In the year 2004 obtained its first professional title in the First B of Chilean soccer, leaving invicto in the final phase the championship.

In the year 2005 its passage by the First Division was very short, because it descended to the First B after Sport Club O'Higgins fell in the Liguilla de Promoción before Club Deportivo O'Higgins. But in the year 2006 returns to the honor division winning to Lota Schwager by 2 to 0, under the technical manual of the newcomer technician Luis Musrri, sealing his third ascent to the First Division in its history. That same year, they obtained its second professional title, when tying to one with Curicó Unido, gaining therefore title 2006 of the First Chilean B.

In the year 2007 was directed by the technician Luis Musrri taking to Deportes Melipilla to its better campaign in First division being in ninth position of the general, Luis Musrri out to the equipment in the closing championship being replaced by Ronald Fuentes obtaining a similar campaign with great triumphs like the obtained one against Universidad Catolica .

Until now the year 2008 has been a difficult year for Deportes Melipilla, that the Match of Opening 2008 culminated last. After 12 dates, resigned Ronald Fuentes and was replaced by Ricardo Dabrowski that in four dates, has only obtained a triumph, before Universidad de Concepcion.

The history of the club dates 1916, when a group of friends, headed by the professor of the boys' school, Manuel Lara Gutierrez, decide to form a sport club in Chillan. On 20 August of that year, in the boys' grade school, they created the "Liceo Fútbol Club" (Grade School Football Club) which sections in with basketball, boxing, and football, among others.

The football team remained in the amateur league for a long time, where it won the local championship eleven consecutive years (1938–1948). Among its ranks passed many notable players including Eduardo Sanhueza Martin, Candelario Sepúlveda, Tomas Bravo Figueroa, Carlos González Utreras, and Humberto Fagnilli Fuentes who renames the club after the province, calling it "Liceo-Ñublense."

In 1959, the helmsman of the time, Mario Avendaño, accepts an invitation to join the Asociación de Fútbol Nacional, and becomes a professional team.[2] In its first year as a professional team, they were prepared. Argentine coach Martin Garcia joined the club along with young players who had experience in professional football, one from them was the goalkeeper Luis Venzano Justiniano, originating of Universidad de Chile, and who was the first professional football player signed by the team.

The year 1979, is descended to second, with technician Hernán Godoy in the bank, and a year later, again ascends, this time like vicechampion, with the presidency of Don Osvaldo Erbetta Walker, and technical manual of Manuel Rodriguez Vega. From 1981, begins a bad time for the red ones. Soccer and extrasoccer problems, cause that it falls to second. In 1983, lowers to third division, cayendó in its last encounter of the premises as opposed to Curico United by 5-1, dragging with himself a great debt, that causes a forced name change, being called to United hour Ñuble . During these three years, a series of technicians and leaders, who tried to fix the problems, without having good results circulated.

In 2007, Ñublense transformed into Joint-stock company Sport Professional being directed by a group of investors headed by Juan Carlos Saffie. Ex-president Zarzar left his position in the hands of Leonardo Cusacovich, who became vice-president of the society, whereas Don Sergio was transformed into director of the South zone of the Association of Professional Soccer.

Provincial Osorno were founded in June 5, 1983 by a group of amateur football and local authorities, who designed Sergio Toloza as the first Provincial Osorno's Chairman.

In July 1983, the club appointed Juan Soto as manager. Six local amateur players were included in the first squad. Later that year the club played their first official Primera B match against Lota Schwager, at the Estadio Bancario de Osorno (P. Osorno won 2-1). Two years later the club became very popular, resulting in many home sell out crowds in the Estadio Parque Schott that season.

In their early campaigns Provincial Osorno struggles to show good results on the pitch. Only in 1990, Provincial Osorno finally won the second division title to win promotion to the Primera Division for the first time, under the direction of manager Guillermo Yavar, but they finished near the bottom of the table and were relegated in 1991.

The return to the second division in 1992 owes a great deal to the appointment of manager Jorge Garces, who brought new tactics and a new training regime resulting in an impressing campaign that year. This time the club managed to stay in the top flight until 1998, with regular campaigns, with the exception of 1996, when, under the direction of manager Oscar "Cacho" Malbernat they finished 6th. In 1999 they won promotion to the Primera Division in a playoff with Cobresal, returning immediately to the Primera B the next year.

Since then, the club struggles to show good results on the pitch with the notable exception of 2003 when they qualified to the Copa Sudamericana, having beating four First Division's teams in a row, only to lose against Universidad Católica on penalties, in the highly controversial second-leg match. In 2006 the club was turned into a Sports' joint stock company.

On November 25, 2007 P. Osorno were crowned champions of the Primera B 2007, after beating Municipal Iquique 4-0 at Tierra de Campeones Stadium, and returned to the Primera Division for the upcoming 2008 season.

The club were founded on August 20, 1920, when they participated in a colonial competition in Osorno. The club was founded by Palestinian immigrants, the name of the club reflect the clubs roots in the Palestinian community. In 1952 the Federación de Fútbol de Chile set up the first professional leagues Palestino were accepted into the Second Division, which they won to ascertain promotion to the Primera Division.

In 1955 the club won their first national championship under the control of Argentine captain Guillermo Coll, in that era the club became known by the nickname millonario (Millionaire) because of their ability to attract top class footballers.

In 1978 the club won their 2nd league title, this time led by Chilean captain Elias Figueroa, In this campeign they set a Chilean record for the number of games unbeaten and won the Copa Chile to claim the league and cup double.

In 2004 the club became a registered company, but the change of status did not bring the expected improvement in results. In 2006 they finished in 18th place out of 20 teams, forcing them to face a playoff against Fernandez Vial to keep their place in the top flight.

Based in the city of Talca, the club was founded November 2, 1902 and plays in the first division of the Chilean football league. Their home games are played at the Fiscal stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 17,000 seats. The name Rangers (meaning ‘One of the Defending Watchman’) was chosen by an Englishman, Juan Greenstret, who was one of the founding fathers of the Club.

The origin of the chosen team colours, red and black, are unknown, though one of the possibilities was that some of the first players were also members of the Second Company of Firemen of Talca, whose shield was red and black. Throughout their first century of existence, honours have been few and far between, with no Championship successes. They are three time second division champions and runners-up in the 2002 Apertura.

While the club was born as one of the many sport branches of the Universidad Católica de Chile, officially founded in 1937, it began, strictly speaking, around 1910, when students of the University would reunite to play football matches, frequently facing historical rival Universidad de Chile. In time, the idea of creating a professional club emerged, and in April 21, 1937, the club officially and legally began existing. It made its professional debut, in the second division, against the Universidad de Chile. Rivalry, both in sports and in academic issues, made these matches between the Universities become more and more important, eventually reaching the national status of "Universities' Derby". The rivalry maintains itself until today, with each match between these teams being considered a must-see for every football fan in the country.

Although football is a very popular sport, and most teams have a multi-class fan base, the Universidad Católica has attained fame as a favourite of the higher classes, because of many factors, which range from the location of the club's Stadium (in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of the capital) and Headquarters, although there are "UC" fans all around the country, including popular regions or towns. For this reason, is planned to build a new stadium in a more popular place of Santiago.

The club has reached notoriety, both in a national and South American level, as owner of one of the best infrastructures and training centers in the continent. As such, it is a good source of young talents, which occasionally rise to stardom in the club.

The club has won 9 national tournaments, and one international cup: Inter-American cup. Also, in 1993, Universidad Católica was the runner-up in the most important international tournament in South America: the Copa Libertadores de América, losing in the finals against the powerful Brazilian team, São Paulo.

In the last years, the club has been reinserted in the international camp, acceding to Copa Sudamericana semi-final and losing it against the powerful Argentinian team Boca Juniors, this was on 2005 age in which the team will also win the League, in 2006 the team made a good presentation in Copa Libertadores, but it was eliminated at the last minute by Tigres of Mexico.

For the 2007 season of Copa Libertadores, Universidad Católica didn't qualify. Católica played the 2008 edition of Copa Libertadores again with no luck, being eliminated in the group stage by one goal difference by River Plate and América.

The club was founded on May 24, 1927 as Club Deportivo Universitario by the merger of Club Náutico and Federación Universitaria. Initially the club was formed by students of the Universidad de Chile and was the sport brand of the university, that was until 1980 when the university's rector and president of the club at the time (both of them appointed by the Pinochet regime) decided to separate the club from the university and created the CORFUCH to manage the football team. This move was a part of the atomization of the Universidad de Chile that was made by the military dictatorship in order to strength the private universities that were born in that time and reduce the state power.

This was a major blow to the club, because it was left with nothing but a loyal fan base. From then the club started to decline in the results and the economy as the other major clubs were helped by main powers as the government, the catholic church and Codelco. This led to the team's relegation to second division in 1988 and the threats of dissolve the club by the university if the team didn't come back to the first division in one year, but La "U" get the 2nd division championship of 1989 and then started a return to the greatness that suppressed all the previous penuries.

Some ties to the university remain: the club logo is the same as the university's sport logo, an owl, used in the university as a symbol of wisdom. The uniform colors are, like the university's colors, the same. And instead of the logo, the shirt has a big red U. Administratively, there were minor ties, for example, the previous university's rector said that the club must change the name if the directive want to make it a private property, also the best students to enter to the university receive a member card of the club.

In 2006 the club was declared in bankruptcy and received an imposed administration that was very criticized by the supporters, as the new chairman immediately fired club symbols, and tried to transform the club into a private company of public stocks, being opposed to the decision of the club members in a previous assembly. The team finished the year with the worst campaign in the club history and the almost-sure transformation into private company due to the ties between the appointed chairman and several businessman.

The new university's rector make a turn in the relationship with the club after the bankruptcy and allowed the use of the university's name and symbols in a private club in exchange of a royalty. During 2007 the imposed administration sold the club to a private group (Azul Azul).

Universidad Católica is the traditional rival, as the teams inherited the universities rivalry in their origins. Since the 1973 military coup the club engaged in a fan-rivalry with Colo-Colo as Universidad de Chile supporters were more related to left-wing ideas and Colo-Colo was favored by the dictatorship and even named Pinochet their honorary president. Also during this time, the two teams emerged as the most populars Chilean clubs. These days the rivalry with Colo Colo is the greatest in Chile, while that with Catolica is significantly less important.

With 12 points less in the championship and without trainer and with a flight of players, Deportes Concepción received one of the hardest punishments: The club will not be able to participate in the closing match and will descend directly to First B. This decision was taken by the ANFP after considering that the club could not credit financing for the 2008 budget. In addition, the failure specifies that if the club began to play before the definitive resolution, the points obtained in these parties would be annulled. Although the failure is not definitive, the possibilities of success in the appeal are low, and is almost safe that the club will play in the First B during the 2009 season. After appeal and with the match already initiated, the failure was ratified and Deportes Concepción will play in First B.

I personally like los caciques de Colo Colo from Chile. I used to watch some of their games when they were on the Tv. But I haven't been following the team as of late.
