Once slow-starting Purdue located its zone against a zone Sunday in Mackey Arena, the No. 14 Boilermakers pulled away for a 76-40 season-opening victory against Howard.

Led by four 3-pointers each from non-starters D.J. Byrd and John Hart, Purdue made 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) from beyond the arc, missing the Mackey single-game record for 3s by one.

The Boilermakers record for single-game 3-pointers is 16 in a victory at Ohio State on Feb. 7, 1998.

Outmanned Howard (1-1) led 12-10 with 12:41 left in the first half when Purdue was struggling to locate the basket against the Bison's switching 1-3-1 and 2-3 defenses.
