Q & A With Bonzi Wells On his role with the team… "I don't really know what my role is going to be, I'm just going to come here and play my game. Whatever Coach wants me to do, I'll do. I haven't really gotten to sit down and talk with him in depth, but once I know my role I'm just going to try to do it to the fullest of my abilities." On playing the Trail Blazers on Sunday… "I have to get past that. I was a Trail Blazer yesterday, I'm a Grizzlie today. I don't really care what's going on in Portland. I'm just worried about getting this team on track and hopefully we can make the playoffs this year, and whatever happens on Sunday happens, as long as we win." On his reaction to the trade… "I'm just getting off to a fresh start, and in talking to Mr. West he said the fans and everybody is very enthusiastic around here about the ballclub and I just can't wait to get back to the love of the game, the way people love you. In Portland it was like that at first, but lately it's been bad, but I just want to get back in the good graces of the fans and the ballclub." On his off-court problems… "I've never done anything off the court, all my stuff's been off the court (laughing). I might get a few techs here and there, but I've never really had off-the-court problems." On recent incidents in Portland… "It was a Portland thing. I'm in Memphis now, it's over, it happened a long time ago. I just want to look forward and think about my future and not dwell on the past." "Things happen. If you spend any time in Portland you'd know. It gets crazy sometimes, but the people up there are good, the organization is good, I'm just happy to be down here in Memphis. It's a fresh new start, I'm closer to home it's going to be a good situation for me." On not practicing today… "I just got a chance to talk to the assistant coaches, watch and see what my role is going to be, see some of the plays, get a good bird's eye view of the guys and how they play. It's going to be a good situation for me. We have a lot of good wings in (Mike) Miller, (James) Posey, Shane Battier, we've got a lot of guys who can really play. Hopefully I can just fit in and do my job." On Hubie Brown's system… "I heard they play 10 different guys and Portland kind of went with that concept for a long time, so I'm used to it and it's something I'm familiar with and hopefully I flourish in it." On the trade rumors leading up to the deal… "Scottie (Pippen) told me a long time ago, whether they're going to trade you or not, you hear your name in a trade rumor, basically you're auditioning now. Basically you want to go out there and play to the highest of your game." On talking to Jerry West yesterday… "I got chills down my spine, he called me yesterday and I went 'This is The Logo? Oh my God!'. I was talking to him yesterday and I was really excited to hear somebody upbeat talking about me, it was just a blessing and made me feel good in my heart because everyone's been down on me lately and for a guy who's been through so much at the highest level of the NBA, the epitome of the NBA, to call me and tell me all the good things he was telling me about myself just re-charged my battery. I'm ready." On his thoughts about the Grizzlies before being traded… "You think this is the same team like Vancouver and you think you can come in here and get a win, but it's tough to play down here. I don't think I won one time since they've been down here. They're a great young team, they have Jason Williams controlling the point and his game is really under control now, and they have a great inside presence, they have some wings, so like I said, hopefully I can come in here and complement these guys and just try to do my job to the best of my abilities, don't try to do too much, just do my job."
