"PARIS (AFP) - Nordic countries take the greatest care of their environment and their people, according to a ranking published on Thursday by the publication Reader's Digest.

Finland comes top of the 141-nation list, followed by Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and then Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and Australia.

At the bottom of the list is Ethiopia, preceded by Niger, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Chad.

The United States comes in 23rd, China 84th and India 104th.

The ranking combines environmental factors, such as air and water quality, respect for biodiversity and greenhouse-gas emissions, as well as social factors, such as gross domestic product, access to education, unemployment rate and life expectancy."

As I mentioned all the way back on JBB, you just can't beat the Scandinavian countries in quality of life.

It's true. I have family in Norway, and a couple of cousins in Sweden. They love it there, (I personally like Germany more, like the language etc) but those Scandanavian countries take care of their people pretty good. Free healthcare (good one too), free schooling (university etc), lowest crime in europe (or shall we say in earth).

Hmm, but how do these countries view immigrants?

I listen to a lot of public radio andheard a program detailing the rise of anti-immigrant groups in Sweden?

I have no doubt if you where born in Norway you love Norway, but what about some living in Norway who was born in Asia or Africa?

Where did Canada place on the list?

I still think North America is where it's at.

Generally free enterprise and not a whole lot of diversity there either.

They're sitting on a huge pool of oil which has been nationalized and they don't have a huge population. They're in for a rude awakening when the oil runs out.

Nerp, but I plan to ASAP. My fiancée and I even thought about living in Sweden many years down the road. Norway is too expensive and Iceland is too "out there," as beautiful as it is. There's so much to choose from in the World though that when it comes down to the day we'll start planning a move for real I'm sure I'll be blown away. However, I do have some cities and towns in mind that I've never changed my mind about living in or near.

The Swiss are pretty zenophobic... you'd want to make sure you can speak the language well, at least. And be white [IMG]

True, but they're good people. Most at least are. They take care of their people as well. My father has a lot of family there, like uncles, cousins etc, with all their families. All Swiss citizens, they love it there.

Planning on visiting there next year. (germany as well)

I love Switzerland, more specifically the larger cities of Geneva and Lucerne. I'm not sure about the claims of the Swiss being xenophobic. I've travelled there at least 5 times, and I haven't come across it. I'm sure there are some there are areas and people in Switzerland with xenophobic behavior, but you can find those types in any part of the world. According to this survey, more than half of the Swiss were determined to be xenophobic, but 77% of them wanted foreigners to be better integrated. source
