Since we didnt extend Odens rookie contract he now becomes a restricted free agent and theres a possibility we could lose him if he signs the one year contract and he could walk away the year after and sign with someone else. My question is, if we would have extended the contract would he have the same option or would we have more control of the situation?

I hope you guys can decipher what im asking, as i dont really have a grasp on the situation.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
If the Blazers had extended a multi-year extension, and Oden had accepted it, restricted free agency would no longer be an issue. He'd be solidly under contract until the end of that extension and then entered the standard unrestricted free agency like any NBA veteran who's contract ends.

Yeah and the issue was both sides wanted Greg to prove he could stay healthy before agreeing on a new contract. Otherwise what management would have offered wold have been at a very low dollar amount. So there was no reason to even discuss it at that point.

I wonder if he wasnt extended around the same time or shortly after the weiner photos hit the net.. Understandable, but sucks he could walk in a year, right about the timeline of a fully recovered microfracture.

So if we sign him to a 3 yr deal after that can he just walk?

Anyone can just walk after their contract ends. The only difference is that owners have (had) options in the first 4 years to basically opt out of the initial deal instead of beeing obligated for 4-5 years. But after the initial rookie contract, every player is a free agent.

But in the past most teams try to extend the players before they come up for restricted or unrestricted years. (Like in the case for LMA and Brandon)

If another team offers him a 3 to 5 year deal like wesley mathews got we have the right to match and hes locked up. Isnt it likely someone offers him something similar to the wesley mathews deal? A team over the cap can even offer it since we did with wesley using our mid level exception over 5 years. This could work out great or blow up in our face if no one offers up the mid level over extended years.

Yes i think it is likely that some one would make an offer that we can match this year. In 2012 we can certainly match any offer, but Greg could chosse what ever team he wants.

The new CBA will be a factor as the rules could change.

My question is if there's a lockout starting July 1st--before we can offer him a contract or any other team can offer him a FA deal-- and the lockout kills the entire 2011-12 season, does Oden then become a UFA? And since we never had the opportunity to offer him the QO, we lose his Bird Rights?

I don't think anyone knows at this point. I would be shocked if we miss a game in the 2011-2012 season, because it might just fold the NBA. In the end I think the bank accounts will beat the egos.

I sure hope you are right. But I just don't see how the players will give in to dramatic cuts like the owners want, without a fight. (And a few missing paychecks)
