    Just read this on Yahoo!

Terrible news, I thought the guy was a psycho, but we'll never hear:

    "Crikey!"

the way he did it. Died on the job too.

    RIP, Steve Irwin. .

I'm shocked, seems so random I almost can't believe he's actually dead. Really tragic since he's got a family now and quite a way to go out being "barbed through the heart". RIP and condolences to his family.

This really is a shock to me, I live in his home state, about an hour from his Wildlife Park, he has done so much for the environment here and throughout Australia and the world, its like losing a family member up here. He also has 2 young children (one 8, one 3) who he will never get to see grow up. My condolences go out to the Irwin family, such a tragic way to lose him. At least he went out doing what he loved. R.I.P Steve.

Whoops just posted this on the main OT board, didn't see this thread had already been created. Mods please delete/move/merge my thread.

It's kind of weird to think that he's dead, RIP.

    My condolences.

That's shocking. There was always a risk in his job, but I thought for sure if anything happened, it'd be a croc.

I think we all did, almost everyone has been saying that from what I hear.

Thats what did the damage, although it didnt pierce through his heart like a knife or somthing, he was just hit in the chest with part of it. The venom from the stinger kills body tissue and can cause heart failure if hit in the chest, as was the case here.

This is only the 3rd reported case of stingray related death in Australian history.

    Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin dead
    September 04, 2006
THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that' is when it occured.

Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.

Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.

Mr Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.

"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said a call was received about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the boat on Batt Reef off the coast near Cairns with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.

Mr Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Irwins have two children – a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, eight, and a three-year-old son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin.

Bob was involved in a controversial incident with his father in January, 2004, when he dangled him near a crocodile at Australia Zoo.

Mr Irwin carried his infant son in one arm while feeding a dead chicken carcass to a crocodile with the other hand.

Child welfare and animal rights groups criticised his actions as irresponsible and tantamount to child abuse.

Mr Irwin stated any danger to his son was only a perceived danger and that he was in complete control of the situation.

So sad to see him go. People thought he was a bit crazy, but I always liked him. You could tell he was genuine and that he really did care for animals. You could also tell that it was really him being himself on the camera.
A lot of people here felt like they kind of knew the guy, but they didn't. It was a freak accident in my opinion and it's sad.

    We'll miss you Steve....

This is terrible news... Of all the times he got bit by poisonous lizards or snakes, almost eaten alive by crocs, and almost ran over by his own wife driving a jeep, he dies from a stringray? WTF?

That's like General George S. Patton being on the battlefield on the frontlines being strafed, shot at, shelled by the Germans and him dying in something lame like an auto accident during peace time.

I'm so sad to hear about this, growing up, I loved watching his shows and he was like an idol to me... Dieing at such a young age, leaving wife and kinds is always very sad.

Hope the very best for his family.
    RIP Croc hunter...

That really sucks. Of course I always thought that he might be a little crazy, but I did enjoy watching his show when I was <u>very</u> bored. Anybody remember when he took baby child out to the Croc pit? That gave me the idea that he was insane.

    RIP

Man, big shock here. I never cared much for the guy's TV work, but I always gave him a load of credit for what he did for animals and the courage he had to work with crocs so closely. What a tragic end. At least he died doing what he loved the most. RIP

    Steve Irwin 1962-2006

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">As mourners made a shrine of Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo north of Brisbane, a colleague of the popular crocodile wrangler has revealed details of the freak accident which ended his life.

Video footage of Steve Irwin's last moments shows the Crocodile Man pulling out the stingray barb which had pierced his heart, according to Irwin's producer John Stainton.

Mr Stainton described the video as the worst thing he had ever seen.

"I have seen the footage and it's shocking," Mr Stainton told reporters in Cairns. "It's a very hard thing to watch because you're watching somebody die and it's terrible."

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here [in the chest], and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone. That was it. The cameraman had to shut down."</div>

Some people blast Irwin for being just a crazy wildlife guy, I say **** them.
This guy not only helped animals but also worked to improve our enviorment. Somebody with the spirit like Steve Irwin is what we need in this world.
