    Ernie Banks died? Wow. I just spent 8 hours going over today's Google News, and not a mention, including all the bottom-of-the-article links in many articles.

    I owned his card in 1958. I realized it was important when my father praised Ernie Banks. He was just about the best-known black player in any sport then.

    He was my childhood hero. I remember watching the game that he hit his 500th HR.
