Rafinha Back In Schalke Squad

Brazilian full back Rafinha has returned to the Schalke squad for the Champions League qualifying showdown with Atletico Madrid following his Olympic adventure.

The 22 year old, who won a bronze medal with Brazil at the Beijing Games, took part in his first training session on Monday and can expect to be called up for the midweek clash with Atletico Madrid.

“I’m treating him quite normally” explained Schalke trainer Fred Rutten. “He has trained well and will be in the squad for Madrid. Whether he plays or not, I’d rather not say” he added.

Fellow full back Christian Pander has declared himself happy that colleague Rafinha is back despite all the trouble caused by his departure to the Olympics. He has been welcomed back with open arms according to Pander.

“We have greeted him quite normally, he part of our team” he said.

On returning from Madrid the club plan to hold talks with the Brazilian. There is still an official complaint lodged with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arising from his participation in the Olympics against the club’s wishes.

It still remains unclear whether Jefferson Farfan will able to celebrate his comeback against Atletico this Wednesday. The Peruvian injured his shoulder in the first leg and has been absent ever since.

“His selection is not ruled out” explained Rutten.

Jermaine Jones and Orlando Engelaar however will not be included in the Königsblauen squad.
