Raiders eyeing crabtree?

The fact that receiver Terrell Owens signed so quickly with the Buffalo Bills prompted many league insiders to conclude that he must have had no other suitors for his services.

As we hear it, a couple of other teams were interested, but at a price much lower than $6.5 million guaranteed for one year.

One of the potentially interested teams, we’re told, was the Raiders — contrary to published reports that they had no interest.

But the Raiders, as we hear it, privately have explained that they opted not to make a serious play for Owens in part because they believe that Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree will be on the board when Oakland exercises the seventh overall pick in the draft.

With the Seahawks (who hold the fourth pick) signing T.J. Houshmandzadeh and with the Browns (No. 5) and Bengals (No. 6) not needing a receiver, Crabtree likely will be available at No. 7, unless someone trades up to get him before the Raiders pick.

And Raiders owner Al Davis is one of the few who would be truly unfazed by the fact that the former Red Raider won’t be running for scouts before the draft, due to surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot.

Of course, the whole thing could be part of an elaborate smokescreen aimed at making people think that the Raiders want Crabtree, so that teams won’t figure out whom the Raiders truly plan to pick with their first-round selection.
