Ok, I'm seeking all of the sage wisdom on this board from my elder statesmen... My brother went for a walk yesterday with his daughter in Northern NJ and found this:
    Mystery_Nut_Cropped.jpg
I am trying to determine what kind of nut my brother found. It looked like an acorn with an overgrown cap, however when he and his daughter shook it, they heard something rattle inside and when they opened it, there was smell somewhere between peppermint and potpourri.

I've already e-mailed the National Forestry Service, PA State Park system, NJ State Park system, and have googled it for hours... (slow day today at work)

Um... your image isn't showing... I thought acorn, but he heard some sort of rattling inside which would also eliminate a pine cone... and when they opened it, there was smell somewhere between peppermint and potpourri.

The PA Park system got back to me with the response of "Do you have a photo of the tree or a leaf from the tree it came from? This nut is unfamiliar to me. Seeing the tree or leaves would help me identify it." And not having one of a tree nor leaf, they can't help at this point... National Forest service on initial request I couldn't attach the image and it has since been sent to them... hopefully they can get back to me.

...yeah, it kinda looked like a "green" pine cone that had not opened up yet, but that would not explain it being hollow on the inside.
...thought it might be a deformed acorn but that would not explain the spicy smell.

Hammer, the pic you posted, looks a heckuva lot like a Pine Nut, aka Pinon pr: Pin-Yon......

Here's a website with a pic or two of a raw unharvested Pinon Nut. Look's darn near like the one you posted. The website wanted $3 just to download its pic, so here's the URL.......

    http://www.canstockphoto.com/pine-nuts-18447854.html

I live but a few miles now from Pinon Hills, and often have gathered up Pine Nuts, for various Cuisine Dishes. Very expensive to buy, yet cost nada to harvest....The Pine Cone looking object, should have multiple nuts per Cone....

Hey Rick, its good to be back.......

I got a last minute invite to fly to Catalina Island, spent a day Fishing and Scuba Diving, then spent the next 2 days, "Jumping"........aka Parachuting,.......

I still am infighting with my ego, which keeps saying, "you're getting way to fkn old to jump, you crazy bastard", I literally just got home an hour ago, tomorrow, Epdiurals all around, and "On The House"......

:breakdance:What I'd give to Jump into the Grand Canyon, hell one day I just might, which would wind up being my last Jump, as I doubt I could navigate my chute along the Canyon Walls, maybe I should take up Paragliding instead..........? :smiley-smiley-049:....LMAO......good to be home.......:tiphat:

Only drawback, was I couldn't get the YES channel underwater, ......... or hold an I-Phone to get the Yanx games, while jumping, otherwise that'd leave one hand short to pull the cords....
