I have been trying to get information on this with my phone. If the reports I'm reading are true, this is one of the saddest things to ever happen in a sporting contest. (more)
Apparently, Cherepanov was exiting the ice when his chest accidentally collided with teammate and hero Jaromir Jagr's elbo somehow stopping his heart. Accounts I've read say Jagr was crying and begging the 19 year old to wake up. (more)
Cherepanov is listed by Hockey's Future as the Rangers' #1 prospect. He was the 17th overall pick in 2007. He led the Russian U20 team in scoring and was tearing up the Super League. I'll find links when I get home. This is horrible.
There are conflicting stories about the cause of the injury. I also read that they had no stretcher so the players had to carry him out by the arms and legs. How do these arenas not have defibrillators? Jiri Fischer would be dead if Joe Louis didn't have one.
That would be pretty unfortunate, i hope the management gets in deep trouble if this is true. I think we'll get the official story in 2 days or so.
There's a video of him getting carried off the bench, but honestly it's just so disheartening there's no reason to post it here. If you really want to see it just Google it or search YouTube.
The video shows the lack of readiness in the arena. He got carried away by three people and they weren't even in a rush.
