Tuesday’s breakup day will morph into a weed-out off-season for the Rangers.

“We have a couple of flaws on our team,” coach John Tortorella said in a 48-minute exit interview with the media after the Rangers finished ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 38-33-11 mark and missed the postseason for the first time since 2004.

“I think we’ve got a good core of young players. I think there are some problems outside our young core with some players on this club.”

And Tortorella’s concerns are as much off-ice as they are with the team’s inconsistent performance, one the coach does not feel was masked by their 7-1-2 finish that came within a shootout loss of catapulting them into the playoffs.
