The Departed loses points for being a remake and also for being so heavy handed and obvious.

That is a damn shame you've got SI ahead of Casino and TD. When will you ever watch SI again, knowing the plot twist? It loses all replay value.

    1. Raging Bull
    2. Taxi Driver

    ----Large gap----

    3. Mean Streets
    4. Goodfellas
    5. Casino
    6. Kundun
    7. The King Of Comedy
    8. Age Of Innocence
    9. Gangs Of New York
    10. The Aviator
    11. The Color Of Money
    12.Shutter Island
    13. The Departed
    14. Cape Fear

The reason why I have The Departed so low is because I had seen Infernal Affairs, which the Departed is based off of, and didn't really care for his adaptation of it. He didn't choose to do anything different or add his own style to the movie. It's nearly a shot for shot remake, but it was the star studded cast that got him the Oscar.

I think you're underestimating the depth of Shutter Island. The plot and/or twist isn't even all that great IMO but I think there's a lot more there under the surface in the way things are said and presented to the viewer. The dialog was huge for me because underneath the surface plot there's so much more symbolism and meaning to the movie. It had me thinking for days. I think re-watching the movie with knowledge of exactly what's going on would warrant a completely different experience and help to answer some previous questions and provoke others.

Like I said Taxi Driver never did it for me. I think I "get" the movie but I just didn't think it was very interesting. Or maybe I don't get it at all lol. Casino also never really tickled my fancythat much either. Good flick but I think I was always turned off by how thematically similar it was to Goodfellas (IMO). Not to mention it also had similar cinematic/plot qualities with the narration and Joe Pesci in the same general role as Goodfellas. I do actually like Casino, it sounds like I'm trashing it but I actually think its quite solid. Just seemed to overlap with Goodfellas in so many ways while being much slower and less stimulating.

Just my opinion. I didn't expect it to be in line with most people's views. Giving my updated list another look Aviator, Shutter Island, and Casino are practically interchangeable at any time depending on what I'm in the mood for. They're all very good movies IMO but still a notch below Goodfellas (my favorite movie of all time), Departed, and Raging Bull.

If anything Casino is derivative of Goodfellas and makes it the lesser film, but I think Casino is a very underrated movie overall.

Taxi Driver is a little slow, and truthfully is hard to watch sometimes. It's not a movie I can really re-watch again, but it's social commentary, acting, and dialogue are some of the best of its time.

Taxi Driver is about as much a character study as there is in cinema history. De Niro here = BEAST

I see your point Run, I didn't get all of that out of Shutter Island. I'll have to give it another go.

I watch Taxi Driver once, maybe twice a year. Not much replay value, but it doesn't hurt its flawlessness.

How do you figure Casino as the "derivative" of Goodfellas? Goodfellas came out first. Like I said its all in my opinion. Goodfellas spoke to me more. Goodfellas, to me, is non-stop money from beginning to end. I LOVE all the dialog, the plot, the characters, cinematography. Like I said before, a lot of the great things about Goodfellas were copied and pasted into Casino which took away from the movie IMO. And, in my opinion, the plot was not as good and was not as interesting.

I think we're in agreement with Taxi Driver. I get what its saying and that it was great for its time but its hard for me to identify with it. I acknowledge its "character study" (both for the main character and Jodie Foster's character). As a wise Voodoo Child once told me, the technicality of it is all good and dandy but if i think its boring then its worth dick to me. Even the first time I saw Taxi Driver I understood why its one of Scorcese's classics, but as a relatively young person I don't identify with it and I think its flat out boring much of the time. Not saying its any less of a movie. I get why its regarded as highly as it is. It doesn't interest me much though, therefore it gets a low ranking on my list.

Yes, Casino is derivative of Goodfellas. In other words it steals a lot from Goodfellas especially the archetypes of Pesci and DeNiro. I definitely meant that Casino borrows and owes a lot to Goodfellas and thus Goodfellas is the superior film. I'm not sure, did I use the word wrongly?

In regards to Taxi Driver, it's definitely in my top 20 films of all time but it is a bit dated, and I can see why you feel that way. Not for everyone but there are certain parts that most people can identify with. I think that some of the best movies ever are ones that can make you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, and Taxi Driver certainly does that, for me anyway.
