"The Avalanche needed just 31 seconds to put away the Blues in the preseason opener for the teams Tuesday night.

Colorado's David Jones and Luke Walker scored rapid-fire goals in the second period, breaking a 1-1 tie to lead the Avs to a 3-1 victory with 10,615 fans watching at the Scot- trade Center.

Jones squeezed the puck past Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak at 8:33. Jones set up the goal with a nice rush off a feed from TJ Galiardi.

"Gali gave me a nice pass," Jones said. "I just had a one-on-one with a guy and just tried to take him wide. I sort of fanned on my backhand shot and just kind of followed it up, and the rebound was there."

Walker ripped a one-timer past Halak at 9:04 off a perfect centering pass from Ben Walter. Patrick Bordeleau also got an assist.

Jones said the quick goals changed the game.

"It was huge to kill their momentum," Jones said. "They outshot us, but I think we played pretty well for our first exhibition game as a team, and it's nice to come in here and get the win.""
