<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">MINNEAPOLIS?Marcus Haislip was the can't-miss player who did, the NBA lottery pick who never got a second contract with the team that drafted him, the prospect who's now a suspect.

And here he is now with the Raptor summer league team, trying to do just enough in five games here to earn himself at least an invitation to September's training camp and a chance to compete for a job.

He knows how important the next few days are.

"Yeah, this is a big summer for me," he said after making his Raptor debut yesterday, scoring 10 points in 15 minutes of an 89-81 loss to the New York Knicks. "Hopefully, I can do a few things they like."

The Raptors ? at least the coaching staff ? really wants to like Haislip, a 6-11, 230-pound forward, and they are familiar with him.

Haislip was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks, who had Sam Mitchell and Jim Todd on the coaching staff and he did enough to become a starter on a team that went to the Eastern Conference finals in 2001. But a coaching change, a drop-off in his play and a commitment from the Bucks to Tim Thomas made Haislip expendable after three seasons.</div>

This kid can jump out of the gym and is very athletic. His basketball skills are still very raw and really never had a chance to develop in the NBA. The Raptors have a young, promising frontline, I'd be surprised if he made the roster. I could see him developing in the NBDL though.

Yeah, Haislip still has the potential to become a good player. Nice decision for Toronto.
