Raps Training Camp, Day 5: Intrasquad Scrimmage

A few quick notes and quotes from the Raptors intrasquad scrimmage here in Ottawa. I'm at the train station now and have a few minutes before boarding so I'll have some more for you (including some video) when I get back to Toronto.

- To start the scrimmage off, the Black team was comprised of Marco Belinelli, Jarrett Jack, Quincy Douby, Andrea Bargnani, Sonny Weems and Reggie Evans. This left a White team of: Jose Calderon, DeMar DeRozan, Rasho Nesterovic, Patrick O'Bryant, Amir Johnson, Marcus Banks and Antoine Wright.
- Black won 47-32.
- During player intros Hedo Turkoglu, Bargnani and DeRozan received rousing ovations.
- DeRozan came bounding out of the tunnel like a kid who has been waiting for this day -- and the first regular season game of his NBA career-- since the day he was drafted. Johnson was a bundle of energy, too, slapping hands and smiling wide.

- If Reggie Evans continues to practice the way that he played in the scrimmage today, there isn't a question that Bargnani, O'Bryant and Johnson will learn some things along the way.
- Evans finished with 13 rebounds and nine points on 3-5 shooting. He also had five fouls and a whole lot of harassing his teammates all over the court. He was coming out to double guys at half. Fans loved the intensity and hard work he showed and after the game he said this about the fan support: "There are so many great players that paved the way for us to be in the position that we're in. You've got to take full advantage of it. This is a blessing. It's an honour to be in a position like this. It just lets me know how hard I'm working and stuff like that. Right now we're going through a recession so people are trying to do whatever it takes in a positive way… a lot of times when they come to the game, they at least want to see hard work. No matter if you win or lose, they want to see somebody going real hard because they're working hard to earn a living just so they can come to our games."

- Memorable sequence: Belinelli goes baseline to the hole and scores on a beautiful reverse lay in that has the crowd buzzing. While people are still talking about the play, DeRozan comes down on the other end and slams home one of his handful of dunks on his way to 13 to lead the white team.

- Jay Triano on the impact Evans has had all week: "He's a guy we knew would play tough basketball. He's a good defender and we traded away a very good shooter to get a guy who is super tough who doesn't really score a lot but is super tough and will defend and rebound. He changed practices. It was the energy and intensity and I think that is good because people have to match that.
