Mike Nolan has named Tim Rattay the 49'ers starting QB for the regular season...and deservedly so.

Alex Smith, the first pick in the NFL draft has sruggled during the preseason completing 5-16 passes for 43 yards along with being sacked 4 times. Rattay has completed 13 of 19 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns.

It'd be funny to see Rattay come out and have a Drew Brees like year and win comback player of the year or something, he doesn't really have the supporting cast that Brees does though.

Smith barely played and they already made the choice. I find it funny and dont really think its a big deal wht QB they put in theyre not getting far.

i'm sure he was planning to make this move by the third week in preseason so rattay can have some leadership on the team and get prepared for the starting role, not be surprised the first week of the season.

Its good for the devlopment of Alex Smith to sit and learn a little before he is thrown into the starting positon.

I find myself wondering why the 49'ers drafted Smith in the first place. Rattay has potential. I've always felt that... But when the rest of your team totally sucks, what can you do?

They should have taken Braylon Edwards or a Running Back or, well, ANYONE else. Would have been cheaper than signing Smith to that monster deal, too.

Why are we even talking about the 49ers? What a joke of a team.

The 49ers need a QB, and that is why the drafted Smith. Tim Rattay is gonna have to be the comeback player of the year to not lose his job to smith. I dont think that is going to happen because Rattay doesnt have any help. Alex Smith will do better when he knows what he is doing

That's the thing... It's taken Tim Rattay three years to learn the offense, get settled and start playing well. Did the 49'ers honestly expect Smith to just step in and be the savior?

Seriously...other than in rare cases like Roethlisberger last year, most first year QB's struggle and struggle HUGE their first year. Remember Aikman's 0-11 record as a starter his first year? Ugh...

I think I saw that Terry Bradshaw threw like 13 TDs and 22 picks his first year.

They should have skipped Smith in the draft and focused on developing Rattay and Dorsey. They did nothing to improve their team by drafting Smith.

I aint expecting the 49ers to have a winning season. If Alex Smith started the 49ers would probly end up 3-13 or 4-12. Peyton Manning went 3-13 in his 1st year of starting, so im expecting Smith to struggle a lot.

I don't think the 49ers are delusional enough to think that they will earn a playoff berth this season, but they have to set their sights on the post season and play every game as if they have a chance to get there. They can't exactly "strive for mediocrity". (Besides the fact that it makes a crappy slogan, Al Davis' "Just win, baby!" is bad enough).

I no lol well if he doesnt want to hear about the 49ers then he doesnt have to be in the section.

I say just start Smith since hes the future. Manning may have gone 3-13 his rookie year but lok at where he is now. I think he needs experience and then he can become an elite QB.

Rattay should start...Smith doesn't seem to have the composure to start...He could be a Carson Palmer, wait one year till he can start.
