Rookie Troy Smith won the battle for the No. 3 quarterback role as the Ravens released quarterback Drew Olson today.

"Decisions have to be made," coach Brian Billick said after practice at the team's training facility in Owings Mills. "Drew was with us for his first year. A good, young man. I think he has a future, but we had to make a decision. Excited to see how it will play out."

Olson, who was on the Ravens' practice squad last year, completed eight of 13 passes (61.5 percent) for 90 yards and one touchdown with a quarterback rating of 107.9 during the preseason. Smith has completed seven of 19 passes (36.8 percent) for 94 yards with a rating of 53.4.

The Ravens also waived punter Brendan Carney, running back Greg Pruitt Jr., safety Bobby Blackshire, cornerback Terrell Maze and long snapper Nick Leeson.

The team placed offensive tackle Steve Edwards (torn meniscus) on injured reserve and put linebackers Dan Cody (knee surgery) and Mike Smith (shoulder surgery) on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Cody and Smith will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

These moves reduce the roster to 75 players. The team must cut down to 53 players by Saturday.
